Indian shooter Ayonika Paul and Apurvi Chandela did not live up to the expectations to crash out of the women's 10 metres air rifle qualifiers at the 2016 Olympics, being held in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday.
Much was expected from the two young Indian shooters but they could only manage to finish way behind the qualification mark at the Olympic Shooting Centre.
While Apurvi ended 34th with a total score of 411.6, Ayonika finished in 47th position out of 51 participants after getting a 2.0/-2.0 penalty when the qualifiers got over.
China's Li Du created an Olympic record by shooting a total score of 420.7 to finish the qualifiers in first position ahead of German Barbara Engleder (420.3) and Iranian Elaneh Ahmadi (417.8).
A total of eight shooters qualified for the final, which will be held later in the day before of the men's event.
Apurvi and Ayonika are both 23-year-olds who won the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold and silver medals respectively in the same event.
In the competition, each participant gets to shoot 40 times, divided into four series'. The highest point-getters then progress further.
