Abhinav Bindra stamped his authority at the Olympic Shooting Centre in Rio de Janeiro as he marched into the finals of the men's 10-metre air rifle final with a brilliant show on Monday.
However, compatriot Gagan Narang crashed out as the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist finished 23rd with a total score of 621.7.
Beijing Games gold medallist Bindra on the other hand finished seventh with a total score of 625.7 out of 50 participants.
India's only Olympic individual gold medallist, Bindra is taking part in his fifth and last Olympics and this is the only event the former World Champion is competing in the ongoing Games.
Campriani Niccolo of Italy topped the qualification with a score of 630.2, which is an Olympic record.
Bindra, who crashed to a 16th place finish in 2012 London, scored 104.3, 104.4, 105.9, 103.8, 102.1 and 105.2. His last series of 105.2 proved to be the clincher as the four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist raised his game when it mattered the most.
The final is slated later today.
