India's Babita Kumari qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics after Mongolia's Sumiya Erdenechimeg failed a dope test in the women's 53 kg at the Asian Olympic qualifier. Babita's first match comes up around 7:10 PM IST at the Carioca Arena in Rio. The medal rounds will be fought past midnight.
Babita, a gold medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, is seen as a strong medal contender at Rio. Her reputation as a grappler has been on the rise since 2012 but she was lucky to win a berth on the Rio squad.
Interestingly, Babita survived a Zika virus scare last week. But Indian team sources said it was normal fever and body ache and Babita is fit and fine to start today.
