India will be up against big-scoring Netherlands at the Olympic Hockey Centre today. Currently third in the table, a better position in their group will ensure a relatively weaker opponent in the knockout rounds.
Netherlands and Germany have already booked their places in the quarterfinals. On paper, India and Argentina should be the other teams to make it. A point today will guarantee that.
Netherlands have been on a goal-scoring spree in Rio. The world No. 2 team thrashed Canada (world No. 15) 7-0 to move second in the standings with seven points. The Dutch have scored 15 goals so far in the tournament.
In their 7-0 rout of Canada, Mink van der Weerden continued his staggering Olympic scoring record by netting for a 10th match in succession, a sequence that started in the Netherlands' opening match at the London 2012 Olympiad.
Van der Weerden bagged a hat-trick in the contest, with live-wire striker Jeroen Hertzberger also scoring twice as the European champions outclassed Canada, who sit sixth in Pool B.
On Tuesday, Asian champions India (world No. 5) took a big step towards sealing their place in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 win against Pan-American champions Argentina (world No. 7).
Goals from Chinglesana Singh and Kothajit Singh proved to be decisive for the eight times Olympic gold medallists, who are third with six points, two points clear of Argentina.
