Bombayla lost to Alejandra Valencia 6-2
Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi's Rio Olympics archery campaign came to an end on Thursday. Both lost their pre-quarterfinal matches at the Sambodrome.
Deepika was the first to crash out. She lost her individual recurve match against world No. 2 Tan Ya-Ting of Chinese Taipei. Bombayla followed suit soon after, losing to Mexico's Alejandra Valencia.
Deepika lost 6-0 after Tan won all the three sets. A set, where the archers fire three arrows each, is worth two points.
Deepika lost the first set 28-27. Both archers fired a 10 each but an 8 by the Indian made the difference. The conditions were good for both archers.
Tan looked the better shooter as the match wore on.
With two 10s against Deepika's nil, Tan won the second set 29-26 and then swept to victory with three 10s in the third and final set (30-27).
Bombayla blows away a good start
Bombayla, in her third Olympics, blew away a good start against Mexican youngster Alejandra. The Indian lost 6-2 after splitting the first two sets.
The third set was the game changer. But Alejandra held her nerves better, shot two 10s to edge out Bombayla 28-27.
A horror start (a six-pointer) pegged back Bombayla in the fourth set. Alejandra was a shade better. A 10-pointer with her second arrow gave her game, set and match (25-23).
