Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar has made history by vaulting her way into the finals at the Rio Olympics.
Here are 10 must-know facts about Dipa:
1) It is Dipa's 23rd birthday on Tuesday. She was born on August 9, 1993 in Tripura's Agartala to Bengali parents.
2) At Rio, on Sunday, she performed the daring Produnova vault, which consists of a front handspring and two front somersaults. She scored 14.850 points after two attempts to make the finals in the eighth place.
3) Dipa is one of the only five women to have landed the Produnova in competition. She is the only gymnast attempting the Produnova in Rio.
4) After missing out on an automatic Olympic qualification by just 0.4 of a point at last year's Glasgow World Championships, Dipa won the vault gold in the Rio test event in April, this year, to become the first Indian female gymnast to qualify for the Games.
5) Her coach is Bisweshwar Nandi, who has been training her for more than 15 years.
6) With no apparatus or money available, Dipa started training on a springboard that Nandi built using second-hand parts of a discarded scooter and stacking several crash mats on top of each other to make a vault.
7) "I used to coach boys before and then Dipa came my way. In India, there are a lot of hurdles and complications when a man coaches a woman," Nandi told Reuters.
8) Dipa Karmakar first made headlines by winning a bronze medal in the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, only the second Indian to do so after Ashish Kumar.
9) She became the first Indian to reach an apparatus final at the World Championships in 2015. She finished fifth.
10) She is one of India's top medal hopes at Rio.
