Australia defeated Sri Lanka by 53 runs (via D/L method) in the final to clinch their fourth World Cup, their third title in a row.

Australia's Ricky Ponting became the second captain after the West Indies' Clive Lloyd to win two back-to-back World Cups. Lloyd won his titles in 1975 and 1979 while Ponting led Australia to the 2003 and 2007 crowns following their 1999 World Cup win.

Australia remained unbeaten throughout the tournament winning all the 11 matches.

Termed as "the invincible", Ricky Ponting's men first defeated South Africa in the semi-final by seven wickets where Michael Clarke starred with the bat (60 not out) while Shaun Tait picked four wickets.

In the final, Player of the match Adam Gilchrist's fiery 149 off 104 took Australia to 281/4 in 38 overs. Sri Lanka lost the plot following Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara's dismissal as they could manage 215/8 in 36 overs.
