With David Beckham and his Los Angeles Galaxy team scouting from the stands, Sydney FC put didn't put on much of a show on Sunday.
Sydney and Queensland played to a drab 0-0 draw in their Australian A-League match at Sydney Football Stadium.
Sydney's next opponent will be Beckham's Galaxy in a friendly on Tuesday before a sellout crowd of 80,000 at the crosstown former Olympic stadium.
Beckham, who arrived in Sydney on a private jet from England on Sunday, and his Galaxy teammates were paraded around the ground at halftime.
Earlier Sunday, the first-place Central Coast and Newcastle also played to a scoreless draw.
Newcastle's Mario Jardel, a former Brazil international, found himself in space on several occasions and drew wild cheers from the crowd each time teammates tried to find him with crosses.
The former European Golden boot winner, who played 57 minutes before being replaced, had started only once before and averaged just 22 minutes per game for the Jets.
Newcastle coach Gary Van Egmond was not overly enthused with his Brazilian striker.
"He contributed," Van Egmond said. "There were times when he linked up and held the ball up well and the midfield joined in. But he didn't score and that's his job."
On Saturday, defending champion Melbourne and first-year side Wellington played to a 1-1 draw. In the New Zealand capital, Danny Allsopp scored in the 42nd minute for the visitors before Vince Lia leveled for the Phoenix in the 58th.
Wellington coach Ricki Herbert was pleased with his team's effort.
"It's very much a learning pattern for us," said Herbert. "We're going to have some up and downs, but tonight was a decent result for us against the champions."
On Friday, Perth veteran Jamie Harnwell produced a slick headed goal from a Mitchell Prentice free kick to force a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United.
Harnwell, a 30-year-old defender-turned-striker, netted his fifth goal of the season in the 69th minute after Adelaide defender Richie Alagich put the home aside ahead in the 40th.
