That is it from this game but the action in the Hero ISL 2022-23 will continue on Friday, the 21st of October. Chennaiyin FC will take on FC Goa and that game will begin at 7.30 pm IST. Cheers!
Awards!
The Club Award goes to EBFC for winning the game. The Hero of the Match Award goes to Charis Kyriakou for his stellar showing.
First points on the board!
A top performance from EBFC and they have made light work of NEUFC sealing a big away victory in the process as well. EBFC were on the offensive right from kick-off. This early pressure was then converted into a goal in the 11th minute with a cool finish by Cleiton Silva. NEUFC showed glimpses of attacking intent in the first 45 minutes and could have even equalized just before the whistle as Matt Derbyshire hit the crossbar. EBFC started the second half just as they had started the first half and within 7 minutes of the resumption, Charis Kyriakou thumped home from outside the box to double the advantage. NEUFC were always chasing the game and with more and more players pushed forward, they left themselves open to a counter. It did happen in the 84th minute, Jordan O'Doherty sealed the game with an easy finish. The attacking play was potent from EBFC but their defense was equally good although they had a slight lapse in added time as Matt Derbyshire scored NEUFC's first goal of the campaign. A little too late though and EBFC collected all 3 points.

GOOAALLL!!!
NEUFC manage to pull a goal back but it is a little too late to change things for them here! They get a corner in extra time and it is taken by Emil Benny who delivers a beautiful cross into the box. Matt Derbyshire darts in at the front post and rises well over the defenders to head the ball into the net to get the consolation goal for his team.

End-to-end action!
Chances on both sides as NEUFC get a cross into the box from the left flank, which is parried away by Kamaljit Singh, and in the ensuing counter-attack, Suhair Vadakkepeedika gets a shot off target on the opposition goal.
84'
GOOAALLL!!!
That is game, set, and match! EBFC are winning this comprehensively now! The move begins with a wasted corner from NEUFC and the ball is collected on the left-hand side and fed to Mobashir Rahman who makes a nice run from the half-line towards the NEUFC goal. Two defenders converge on him and he finds space to release Jordan O'Doherty through at goal. He makes no mistake blasting this past Arindam Bhattacharja and making it 3-0 for EBFC!

Another chance scuffed!
Matt Derbyshire is slipped in once again but takes too long on the ball and the defender gets across to block the shot.
79'
Lack of cutting-edge!
EBFC have time and again shown glimpses of threat but are unable to get the final ball in at the moment. Suhair Vadakkepeedika is the latest culprit as he whips in a cross into the arms of the goalkeeper from just beyond the half-line. EBFC's search for a third goal goes on.
77'
Fresh players on!
EBFC choosing to get some fresh legs on to keep their control on the game. Alex Lima and Mobashir Rahman are brought in for Cleiton Silva and Thongkhosiem Haokip.

Some sustained pressure from the home side. NEUFC create another opportunity from the right flank as Jithin M.S serves a cross that goes high but stays in play. Emil Benny collects the ball on the left and whips in another cross but that is cleared away by the EBFC defender.
71'

NEUFC are throwing all the cards on the table as Sylvester Igboun comes on for Michael Jakobsen just after Jon Gaztanaga takes a shot off target.

NEUFC getting close
EBFC bring on Tuhin Das for Naorem Singh as NEUFC comes close to cutting the lead in half once again. Jithin M.S brings the ball forward on the left flank for NEUFC and then does extremely well to slide it forward into the path of Jon Gaztanaga who made a smart run. Jon reaches out and tries to get something on it and does manage to do so but Kamaljit Singh makes a good save. A free kick is awarded to EBFC as the ball came off Jon's hand in the end.

Half a chance!
NEUFC have a sighter at goal but it goes wide. A long aerial ball is played forward into EBFC's box and Matt Derbyshire is able to rise highest and get a flick on. The ball is then half-cleared by the head of Ivan Gonzalez before falling to Imran Khan who has just come on. Imran tries to hit it first time on the half-volley but drags it wide.
63'
Substitution time!
NEUFC make a couple of more changes as they continue their search for a goal. Joe Zoherliana and Imran Khan are brought in as replacements for Rochharzela and Gurjinder Kumar respectively. Can the fresh legs make a difference and bring NEUFC back into the contest?

Man down!
Cleiton Silva tries to attack a loose ball but is clipped from behind by Jithin M.S. Silva pulls up and goes down on the ground. The physios stride out to have a look and EBFC are just able to slow the game down once again.
57'
Offside!
Almost one of the cheekiest goals one would see in the whole season but it will not stand. Another switch of play from left to right and it is once again Suhair Vadakkepeedika who is on the end of the pass by Jordan O'Doherty. A couple of EBFC players burst inside the box and Suhair just slides it towards Thongkhosiem Haokip who pulls off a stellar back-heel and finds the back of the net. The linesman though raises his flag for offside and rightly so.
56'
An uphill task
NEUFC have all to do at the moment. The hosts are 2 goals down at the moment and look deflated but they must believe that there is ample time remaining in this game to make a comeback. Can they do it?
52'
GOOAALLL!!!
An absolute screamer from Charis Kyriakou! Lovely switch of play from EBFC as a brilliant cross-field pass is played from the left flank. The run on the right flank is made by Suhair Vadakkepeedika and the pass finds him perfectly. Suhair does well to bring it down and just slides it into the path of Kyriakou who is bursting forward. Kyriakou hits it first time and the ball just flies off his right boot and into the right corner. No chance for the keeper and EBFC lead 2-0.

EBFC on the offensive
Cleiton Silva almost pulls off a remarkable goal. A sustained spell of pressure from EBFC as they win a corner but it is cleared away. The ball is sent back in towards the edge of the box where Silva just looks to turn his body and place the volley at the far right corner. Unluckily for him, the ball goes a few inches wide of the post. EBFC could have scored three goals in the first three minutes of this half.
48'
Another chance goes begging!
EBFC have come out with intent. The attack builds from the left side and Jerry Lalrinzuala leads it with his superb footwork. He tries to chip it inside the box but a deflection sends the ball looping at the far post. Suhair Vadakkepeedika is not alert and tries to stretch his leg at the last moment but fails to connect cleanly.
47'
Straight at the keeper!
EBFC should really be 2-0 up now. A cracking start to the second half as Charis Kyriakou plays a sumptuous lofted ball on the right flank to set Suhair Vadakkepeedika free. Suhair looks to cross it inside the box and find Cleiton Silva but it is blocked. The rebound falls kindly for Suhair who goes with his left foot and hammers it straight at the keeper.
46'
Resumption!
NEUFC kick things off in the second half and they will now attack from right to left. No changes made by either side at the break as well.
Set up for a thrilling finish!
End of a tightly-contested first 45 minutes but it is the visitors EBFC who lead the hosts, NEUFC. The two teams who are yet to get any points on the board and it was always going to be a cagey affair but EBFC pressed the issue well and looked lethal in attack. Cleiton Silva gave them an early lead in the 11th minute. After that EBFC looked in control of the game and Silva had a couple of more attempts from long range. NEUFC did well to absorb the pressure and not conceded a second goal. In the dying minutes of the half, NEUFC stepped on the gas and created a couple of great opportunities. Matt Derbyshire though struck the crossbar from close range and EBFC were able to keep their lead intact.
45'
Halftime!
The referee blows his whistle and EBFC have the lead at the halftime.
45'
Added time
The signal from the officials is that there will be a minimum of 2 minutes added on at the end of the first 45.
45'
That was close!
It is absolutely stunning that the ball has not found its way to the back of the EBFC net! Rochharzela gets the ball outside the box on the right-hand side and cuts in to find Emil Benny in range to take a shot. He gets the ball on target but there is not enough power on it. Kamaljit Singh gets his body behind the ball but spills it into the path of Matt Derbyshire. He pokes at the ball and misses an open goal as the ball ricochets against the cross-bar. What a let-off for EBFC!
42'
Long ball time!
NEUFC seem to be desperate to get the ball forward now. They have abandoned their efforts to try and work the game from the wings and have resorted to putting long balls for the strikers from the defense.
38'
Good swirling cross!
EBFC are on the attack with Jerry Lalrinzuala on the left-hand side carrying the ball forward. He whips in a delicious cross which is headed upwards by Gaurav Bora but loops up gently into the hands of Arindam Bhattacharja who collects it safely.
35'
Counter-attack opportunity!
NEUFC attack from the right-hand side but a good tackle outside the box starts a dangerous counter-attack for EBFC. It is three on two for the EBFC forwards and Suhair Vadakkepeedika is slipped in on the right. He is unable to put a good cross in as it goes out for a goal kick.
32'
Early changes!
Not often do we see the manager making changes in the first half itself but NEUFC do make a couple of changes. Romain Philippoteaux who looks a bit injured is taken off and Emil Benny comes in to replace him. Also, Mohamed Irshad is replaced by Aaron Evans.
32'
Substitution

27'
Just wide!
Cleiton Silva threatening yet again. Whenever EBFC go on the offensive, it is Silva who is possessing the most threat to the opposition's goal. This time he fires in a shot from the edge of the box and the ball just swerves wide and kisses the side-netting.
25'
Bombardment of crosses!
After a period of misplaced passes, NEUFC have managed to gain some control of the game. They are constantly putting in crosses that are being cleared away by the EBFC defenders. They managed to get close to the box with the ball but it is cleared out finally towards the NEUFC half.
23'
Cleared away
Suhair Vadakkepeedika fouls a NEUFC player around the left touchline. Romain Philippoteaux stands over the ball and sends it inside the box. The EBFC defense is on its toes and the danger is cleared away with minimal effort.
19'
Deflected wide
Cleiton Silva nearly doubles his tally for the night. EBFC do well to maintain possession and switch flanks. Silva plays a neat one-two with another EBFC player on the right flank and then finds himself in acres of space. Silva has a pop and swings his left boot at it. The shot takes a deflection and goes behind for a corner. Nothing comes off it though.
16'
Off the mark!
NEUFC do well to burst forward and then Emanuel Lalchhanchhuaha plays the ball out wide right towards Rochharzela who just has a look up and sends a cross into the box but without any real intent. Matt Derbyshire tries his best to angle his header from distance towards goal but fails to do so.
14'
Nervy defending
EBFC using the long diagonal really well. Lalchungnunga picks up the ball inside his own half on the left flank and sends an aerial ball forward to the opposite flank. Suhair Vadakkepeedika does well to get it in control but somehow Gurjinder Kumar is able to clear it away.
11'
GOOAALLL!!!
Out of nowhere Cleiton Silva scores and EBFC lead 1-0! Catastrophe at the back for NEUFC as Mohamed Irshad is closed down by a couple of EBFC attackers around the left edge of the box. Naorem Singh steals the ball and Silva picks up the pieces and calmly slots it past Arindam Bhattacharja. With this early goal, the game will surely get even more interesting.

A bit of aggression
NEUFC controlling possession at the moment but EBFC defenders doing well to keep them at bay for now. Mohamed Irshad fails to control the ball around the middle of the park and Naorem Singh tries to steal it and burst forward. Emanuel Lalchhanchhuaha though slides across and fouls him.
3'
A high-tempo start
Both NEUFC and EBFC have looked to start with an attacking mindset but the defenses of both sides have been stern. We can already see a couple of good individual battles brewing.
1'
Let's Football
EBFC get proceedings underway in the first half and they will attack from right to left of the screen. They have opted for a classic 4-4-2 formation whereas NEUFC have gone for the 4-3-3 shape. Can either side grab 3 points and get their first win of the campaign?
Toss
The coin flip is won by NEUFC and Michael Jakobsen has opted to attack from left to right in the first half.
National Anthem
We are just a few minutes away from the kick-off but first, the two sets of players head out of the tunnel and line up for the Indian national anthem.

Battle of the underdogs!
NEUFC and EBFC were second-last and last in the Hero ISL 2021-22 season respectively, and from early indications, it appears nothing much has changed in their fortunes. NEUFC have the upper hand over the opponents as they won their home game 2-0 and drew their away fixture 1-1 in the Hero ISL 2021-22. The home side has been on a poor run as they have not been able to win their last six home games losing their previous four in a row. EBFC are also out of rhythm as they have lost three consecutive games having lost their last three away games as well. We expect this to be a cagey affair as both teams will be desperate to build some momentum and create some chemistry within their side. NEUFC’s biggest problem has been their defense as they have now not been able to maintain a clean sheet for 15 games. Michael Jakobsen holds the key to organizing the backline but they need a goal from their front three of Jithin M.S, Matt Derbyshire, and Parthib Gogoi. EBFC’s strength is their midfield mostly composed of Souvik Chakrabarti, Alex Lima, and Jordan O'Doherty but they still need to get their coordination. Sumeet Passi is proving to be the weak link in their defense but he has been playing out of position just like many of his teammates. It will be impossible to predict the winner in this game as both teams have failed to impress but there is an opportunity here for them to get their act together.
Matchweek 3!
We arrive at Matchweek 3 of the football extravaganza in the Hero Indian Super League 2022-23 where we see the two bottom-placed teams battle it out to kickstart their campaign. It will be the encounter between two teams from the eastern part of India as NorthEast United FC take on East Bengal FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati. After losing both their games so far, the two teams are separated by goal difference with NEUFC yet to score a goal in the league. They come into this game on the back of a 3-0 trouncing from the hands of HFC whereas EBFC conceded a goal in extra time against FCG to lose the game 2-1. One of these teams could seal three points and get off the mark or they could share the spoils. Either way, there is much to look forward to in this exciting contest.
