A devastating end to FIFA World Cup 2026 for Australia. So close, yet so far. They were Egypt's equal on the night, only to suffer a heartbreaking defeat on penalties. Nevertheless, it's a campaign they can look back on with pride. A stunning win over Turkey in their first group game. They qualified as runners-up, and went toe-to-toe with Egypt till the very last moment.

With this win, Egypt progress beyond the first knockout round of a FIFA World Cup for the first time in history. They become the second African team to enter the Round of 16, after Morocco. A brilliant achievement for Mohamed Salah and co.!

Brilliant left-footed cross by Salah, it is defender Rabia's header, the goalkeeper was wrong-footed but he reacted just in time to deny the goal!

Egypt's Mohamed Hany has now registered the embarrassing record of the most own goals scored by a player in the single edition of a FIFA World Cup. Today's own goal was his second of the tournament, after having netted an own goal against Belgium in the group stage too. No other player in World Cup history has scored two own goals in a single edition previously. 

GOAL! Australia are back in the game! A lovely inswinging cross from Aiden O'Neill into the box, it's right into the mixer, Harry Souttar jumps high, but the final touch comes off Egypt defender Mohamed Hany as the ball goes into his own net. 1-1!

Not for the first time today, Egypt defender Mohamed Hany is down on the ground in pain. He suffered a nasty collision with Australia's Connor Metcalfe in the box, as they both tried to head the ball from a cross. Medical staff comes out to check Hany, but he looks to be okay.

We are back! The second half is underway between Australia and Egypt. Egypt have the advantage, but Australia are still in it. And it's a huge chance for Egypt straight from kick-off! Omar Marmoush manages to get between the Australian defence, takes a brilliant first touch, but his shot is inches wide of goal!

HALF TIME! The first half comes to an end at the Dallas Stadium. Egypt head into the break with a one-goal lead, thanks to Emam Ashour's 13th-minute headed goal. Australia have created a number of chances, but have been unable to find their goal. They're still very much in this game, though!

Five minutes have been added on at the end of the first half. Australia launch another attack, Cristian Volpato cuts in and takes a shot again from the edge of the box, but his curling effort goes wide of the Egypt goal. Australia swing another cross soon after, Irankunda tries to slam a header, but Egypt's defence manage to prevent it.

A set-piece for Australia, the ball is floated into the box. Irankunda gets it in the box after a couple of knock-on headers, he lays it for left wing-back Aziz Behich, who shoots from the edge of the box. The shot has power, but it's straight at the Egyptian goalkeeper. Australia gaining some momentum again.

Australia forward Nestory Irankunda appears to be caught by Egypt defender Yasser Ibrahim, and Irankunda ends up taking out Egypt's Mohamed Hany upon impact of the original foul. Hany is down on the ground for quite a while, but ultimately manages to get up and play continues. Surprisingly, no yellow card for Ibrahim for the original foul on Irankunda.

Egypt are in control of the proceedings against Australia at the moment. After a bright start, the Socceroos have found failed to threaten the Egypt backline much over the last 15-20 minutes. Egypt have enjoyed 63% possession so far.

Egypt are surprising Australia with their attacks. First, Omar Marmoush sees a shot blocked by Australian defender Harry Souttar, and then Egyptian forward Mostafa Ziko goes through on goal and misses, although he was later ruled to be offside.

GOAL! Egypt take the lead! A foul on the left wing for Egypt, right on the edge of the Australia box. Mohamed Salah tries to play a cheeky backheel for his teammate, who takes the shot. Australia fail to clear it away properly, a cross comes in from the right and it's headed home by winger Emam Ashour!

Australia hit the post! Cristian Volpato cuts in from the right and takes a powerful shot from outside the box with his left foot, it goes over the goalkeeper, then dips but hits the crossbar! Massive chance for Australia in the opening minutes, Egypt survive a scare.

On the other hand, after failing to get out of the group stage in 2018 and not qualifying in 2022, Egypt have made it to the knockouts in 2026.

Neither Australia nor Egypt have ever progressed beyond the first knockout round of a FIFA World Cup. Round of 16 is the highest that both sides have managed to progress, but in those tournaments, that was the first knockout round. So, the winner of today's match will make history!
