Polish prisons make room for Euro 2012 arrests

Polish justice authorities say they are moving some 600 inmates out of jails in cities hosting European championship games next month to make room for law-breaking football fans and are putting judges on stand-by.

Spokeswoman for the Justice Ministry Patrycja Loose said on Thursday that no major disturbances are expected but that the ministry prefers to be safe than sorry.

Luiza Salapa, a spokeswoman for prison authorities, said that up to 600 inmates are being moved from Euro host cities' prisons elsewhere to make room in cells in case any fans get arrested.

Also, some 350 judges are being put on stand-by on match days in the four host cities: Warsaw, Wroclaw, Gdansk and Poznan.

The championship runs from June 8-July 1 in Poland and in neighbouring Ukraine.
