Canberra:
Karthik at the other end was finding it difficult to keep pace with Sehwag, luck though seemed to be favour him, an umpiring error giving him a second life.
Virender Sehwag, though was on fire. The nawab of Najafgarh looked determined to return to his conquering ways, smashed the ACT bowlers to all corners of the field, reached his fifty in just 37 balls.
The Indian openers were clearly in the drivers seat, dictating the pace of the game, as India continued to score at well over 6 an over.
The nawab of Najafgarh though was the more dominant of the two. Sehwag took only 78 balls to score 113 runs, 88 of which came in boundaries.
With Sehwag, it was Karthik who took charge.
But the reserve wicket keeper fell short of a hundred, dismissed for 97. The biggest disappointment for the Indian though was clearly Yuvraj Singh failing for the 6th straight time on this tour. Yuvraj fell for just 3.
Irfan Pathan got some good batting practice towards the end, along with Rahul Dravid. The duo put on 33 runs before India declared at tea on 281/4, setting a target of 315 runs for the hosts.
Chris Rogers had scored a 50 in the 1st innings, but he failed to repeat that feat. Pathan removing the left-hander being tipped as Matthew Hayden's replacement for the Perth Test, if Hayden doesn't recover from his hamstring injury.
Pankaj Singh did his selection chances for the Perth Test no harm, picking up 2 wickets.
With no result in sight, the captains decided to call it a day. The match ending in a tame draw, but not before the Indian team management got a good look at all their batting and bowling options ahead of the crucial Perth Test.
