Brandon Bress made his Test debut under very odd circumstances. Pascal who was brought in as replacement for Ravi Rampaul, suffered a neck injury during warm-up and Bess who was training at the High Performance Centre at Bridgetown was rushed to the ground not arriving until the second over of the game!
The nerves clearly showed as he was carted around the park by the South African batsmen ending up with match figures of 1-92 and an economy rate of over 7. However, Bess was appreciated for turning up at such a short notice, an offer many would have declined.
Earlier, the right arm pacer made his debut for Guyana in 2008 and was also a regular feature in the West Indies A sides. His best season was in 2009-10 where he achieved an average of 33.69 which saw him appear for West Indies A against Zimbabwe in 2010 before his surprise inclusion for the said Test against South Africa.
Little is known of Bess but if he was plucked from total obscurity to represent West Indies the lad must surely be talented.
