The powerful left-hander smashed 11 sixes and five fours as the Windies successfully chased down England's score of 182 for six at the Wankhede Stadium.

Gayle was well supported in the other end by incoming batsman Marlon Samuels (37 off 27). The duo added crucial 55 runs partnership for the second wicket to take team's score past 50-run mark.

Earlier, Joe Root top-scored for England with a tidy 48, including two exquisite sixes, off 36 balls.

Alex Hales and number three Root struck up a healthy partnership as England quickened their run-rate, reaching 81 for one after 10 overs.

The partnership was at 55 runs when six foot seven inches left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn bowled Hales in the 12th over with England's opener having made 28.

Jos Buttler made 30, including three sixes, before being caught by Carlos Brathwaite in the deep, while Morgan scored 27 not out.

Andre Russell (2/36) and Dwayne Bravo (2-41) were the pick of bowlers for the West Indies.

Chasing a challenging target of 183, West Indies got off to a disappointing start losing opener Johnson Charles (0) off the second ball off the innings.

But his opening partner, Gayle played sensibly without taking any undue risk. He was largely off-strike in the opening stages but lit up the tournament when the opportunity came his way.
