Indian players won the World Cup for the first time in 1983. An achievement. Indian players won it against in 2011. A feat. Comparisons however have been drawn aplenty between the playing XI of then and now. NDTV takes a look:

MS Dhoni: Has earned many adjectives and not many cricket fans have chosen not to do his character sketch after he led his team to the crown with his unbeaten 91. Took time to strike form but did eventually in the biggest game.

Kapil Dev: This skipper however, led his team by example for most parts of the tournament in 1983. A brilliant knock of 175 against Zimababwe or a nagging habit of being amongst wickets, Kapil took the tournament by storm.

Virender Sehwag: So he scored nothing in the final match. Sehwag though, displayed his brash style of play in the preceding matches to good effect. Hit or miss approach worked (mostly at least) for this nawab.

Kris Srikkanth: He did not have any fancy nicknames but his batting was every bit as effective. Responsible for a solid foundation in the final match against West Indies, he also managed to lead a team that eventually chose the team that eventually won the World Cup, 28 years later. Still making an impact!

Sachin Tendulkar: It was his dream to win the World Cup for India and he played his part in accordance with his famed abilities. Scored 18 in the final match but was rock solid when he opened with Sehwag.

Sunil Gavaskar: He recently said, at NDTV's Indian of the Year Awards ceremony, that the team of 1983 was better looking than the 2011 counterpart. Jokes and perceptions aside, Gavaskar scored all of 2 before falling to Andy Roberts but had some crucial knocks to his credit in the 1983 tournament.

Virat Kohli: Since the topic of looks has been broached, Kohli was the high-point for Team India, both when playing and to look at. Period. Scored a patient 35 at Wankhede.

Roger Binny: This man, say social researchers, had a (female) fan-following that could rival that of any player in the side that won the World Cup against Sri Lanka. On-field, had 2 runs and a wicket to show as his final contribution in the final match of the 1983 World Cup.

Yuvraj Singh: This man rogered bowling at will in the 2011 World Cup. He has the man-of-the-tournament award as proof. His part-time spin was effective too. Yuvi-magic had the host nation in a frenzy, quite unseen before.

Ravi Shastri: Versatility was not a characteristic that was missing before. Shastri was mainly a bowler whose spin left the opposition in a tizzy. His batting also frustrated them on several occasions.

Zaheer Khan: Pleasing on the eyes and equally brutal on the wicket and the bat. Zaheer was the pace-spearhead for India and had the wickets to show that leadership role suited him just fine.

Madan Lal: What made this man more lethal than many in the team after him was that he delivered in the '83 World Cup, a time when fierce pace was setting and breaking and setting all over again, new benchmarks.

Harbhajan Singh: This Punjab-puttar put the spin in Indian team's fortunes in his own unique way. Took only a wicket in the final match but his economy rate of 5 was more than acceptable. Has fallen from the radar since, however.

Mohinder Amarnath: Another player from Punjab, this man had his own claim to fame. Was 33 when India won the World Cup and had already written his name in Indian cricket's hall of fame.
