Top of the World: MS Dhoni became the second Indian cricket captain to win the World Cup. The year could not have begun on a better note as the maverick skipper led India to triumph in the 50-over format for the first time in 28 years.

Yuvraj of Indian cricket: The year began with a bang for this uber cool south-paw. Man of the tournament in the cricket World Cup is a definitive high for most sportspersons. Although the rest of the year has been less fortunate for Yuvraj Singh, he did play his part in the team and made India proud.

The personal front may have been forgetful for her in 2011 but professionally, Gutta continued to show the world why she can battle the best, to be the best.

Walmiki and his determined unit: Battling the odds can be tough but Yuvraj Walmiki did and came out on top. Sports is a great leveler and this hockey player got a first-hand experience after his charismatic skills took India to victory in the Asian Champions Trophy. From living in a shanty without electricity to becoming the new poster-boy of Indian hockey, 2011 has been a great year for him.

Rohan Bopanna wins Paris over: He and his Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi carved their reputation in France, winning the doubles event of the Paris Masters. The pair showed what bilateral partnerships in sports can achieve, both sides of the border.

Tintu's double gold: PT Usha's protégé Tintu Luka achieved a double gold on the European Circuit, at Karlstad and Amsterdam while she settled for a silver at Leuven, Belgium in August. In September, the Kerala athlete participated in the World Championships, where she failed to advance to the final round, but her performance was enough for her to book a berth at the 2012 London Olympics.
