Asia Cup: Clinical Pakistan Edge Past Sri Lanka
Pakistan's batting finally came good as they successfully chased down a competitive total to win the Asia Cup match against Sri Lanka by six wickets. Batting first, Lankans posted 150 for four. In reply, Umar Akmal and Sarfarz Ahmed helped Pakistan win the game with four balls to spare.
After being asked to bat first, Sri Lanka got off to a flier with Dinesh Chandimal and Tillakaratne Dilshan putting on a 110-run stand for the opening wicket.
Wahab Riaz gave Pakistan the first breakthrough as he removed Dinesh Chandimal for 58. Chandimal was looking to push the scoring rate and was caught by Sharjeel Khan at short mid-wicket.
Dilshan meanwhile, brought his half-century and looked fluent since then. He attacked Pakistan's left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz, hitting him for two boundaries and a six. He remained unbeaten on 75 off just 56 balls.
Sri Lanka got off to an ideal start with Mohammad Hafeez succumbing to Shehan Jayasuriya. Hafeez looked in good touch, but failed to make any serious contributions and was caught by the bowler himself for 14. Sharjeel Khan looked good in his brief stay, before he too perished for 31.
Pakistan were reeling before Sarfaraz Ahmed's counter-attacking cricket bailed them out of a precarious position. Sarfaraz hit a 27-ball 38 and along with Umar Akmal he added 36 runs for third wicket, which kept Pakistan in the chase.
However, there was a twist in the tale when Milinda Siriwardene removed Sarafaraz for 38. The Pakistani batsmen looked to sweep the left-arm spinner but failed to make any contact and was adjudged LBW.
Umar Akmal continued to build on the good start that he got and almost completed the game for Pakistan with 37-ball 48. He along with Shoaib Malik added 56 runs, which turned the game in Pakistan favour. He succumbed, while trying to hit one out of the park, just two runs short of his half-century.
Shoaib Mailk and debutant Iftikhar Ahmed comepleted the formalities to help Pakistan register their second win of the Asia Cup.
