We are back for the chase! The players of West Indies are out in the middle. Andy Balbirnie and William Porterfield will open the batting for Ireland. Jason Holder will start with the ball.
...THE RUN CHASE...
Right then! Ireland need 270 runs to win the first ODI of the series! The pitch seems to have eased out a bit and the tourists have a good chance to draw first blood here! Will the Irish batters put on a show and help their side start off on a winning note? We'll find that shortly. Do join us for the chase.
Shamarh Brooks is up for a quick chat. He says that it feels very good to perform on his debut game but is gutted to miss out on a hundred on debut. Adds that they were struggling at the start but he had a good partnership with Kieron Pollard. Tells that his partnership with the skipper was very crucial. Mentions that they have a decent score on the board and their bowlers will need to get some early wickets for them now.
West Indies began their innings in a comprehensive manner but it went downhill from there. They lost wickets in quick succession and were in a spot of bother. But, Kieron Pollard and Shamarh Brooks did some damage control and rebuilt the innings. They stitched 155 runs together and guided West Indies to a healthy total of 269. Brooks had an amazing debut but he would be disappointed after missing out on his maiden century by just 7 runs. Pollard too, played a fine knock of 69. He started off slowly and switched gears at the right time. An entertaining first half of the game, it's now upto to the bowlers of West Indies.
Ireland got the desired start, they took wickets in a cluster at the beginning and put West Indies under pressure early in the innings. But, they leaked out runs and lost the way in the middle. After breaking the partnership between Pollard and Brooks, they got back in the game by picking up quick wickets at the death and restricted West Indies to 269. Mark Adair was the pick of the bowler, he was economical and grabbed three vital wickets for his side. Ireland now need 270 runs to clinch the first game, but they are up against a fiery West Indies bowling attack.
A great recovery from the hosts and a fine batting display! At one point 220 was looking far-fetched but they have done well to put a handy total of 269 on the board, courtesy of a fine partnership by Kieron Pollard and Shamarh Brooks. Ireland would not be completely satisfied with their performance after an exceptional start.
