That's it from us for this game. Do join us in three days for the 2nd ODI between the two teams at Wellington on 6th February. Until then, it's good bye from us.
MARTIN GUPTILL has been named the Man Of The Match. It was really his innings which set the tempo for the Kiwis. Had he not been run out, who knows, we might have even seen a double hundred from him and a Kiwi quadruple. What a knock.
This is a new record for Australia - one they would not be particularly proud of. This is the first time that they have been bowled out inside the 25th over in an ODI. The previous one was 25.2 overs, against arch-rivals England, way back in Birmingham in 1977. That time their score was 70.
Kudos to the new-ball pair of Henry and Boult with the former in particular bowling a great spell. The duo's heroics dealt early blows from which Australia never really recovered. McCullum's typically aggressive captaincy also has to be lauded. Early in the day, Guptill and Nicholls played pivotal knocks to get NZ to a fine total after the early blitzkrieg by the hosts' skipper. Australia did bowl well in the final 25 overs but in the end, the total of 307 seemed more than adequate.
Australia have been shot out for 148. An emphatic 159-run win for New Zealand as they go 1-0 up in the 3-match ODI series. Chasing 308 to win, Australia virtually lost the game in the first 10 overs itself as they were 6 down very early in the game. Wade and Faulkner tried to repair the innings but the damage had been done by then. Wade perished to Anderson followed quickly by Faulkner as the innings folded up inside the 25th over.
