Right then, that is all from this entertaining contest where more than 400 runs were scored. India Women have gone 4-0 up in the series and will now have their sights firmly set on the whitewash. Sri Lanka Women, though, can take heart from this game and will hope to get one in the bag and finish on a positive note. We will be back here again at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on 30th December, Tuesday, for the fifth and final T20I, which begins at 7 pm IST (1.30 pm GMT). As always, you can join us early for all the build-up to the game. Until then, cheers and goodbye!
Smriti Mandhana is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for her brillaint knock. She says that it was a bit difficult to get into the T20 mode in the first three games after playing a lot of ODIs. Adds that she is happy to contribute and is glad that they won the game. Mentions that she did not change her plans, she just saw how the Sri Lankan Women bowlers have been bowing to her, and tried to play accordingly. Says that it is all about the execution. Tells that watching Shafali was incredible as she did the bulk of the hitting, and it is great to see her mature with every game. Further adds that in the last year, the team has gelled in really well and everyone celebrates each other's success, and that's why they were all happy when Kamalini G took the catch.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the victorious skipper of India Women, says that in the last couple of overs, she was just trying to get everyone to hurry as they were short on time and did not want to get penalised. Adds that she has been playing cricket for a long time, and she tries to learn from her mistakes. Credit to Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma for the way they batted. Ends by saying that they wanted to give Harleen Deol a chance in this game, but due to the match situation, they sent Richa Ghosh to bat as she can finsih better than anyone esle in the team.
Chamari Athapaththu, the captain for Sri Lanka Women, says that they improved in the batting from the last games, but still need to be better with the power hitting. Adds that India Women batted really well, but the Lankan bowlers did not bowl that well, and they have a lot of youngsters in the team. Says that they have learnt a few things playing against the best team in the world. Mentions that Vaishnavi Sharma has been bowling really well. Tells she has not played in the WPL, but she bowls according to her plans, and Harmanpreet Kaur uses her well.
Presentation Time...
India Women will be a tad disappointed despite winning the game. They struggled in the Powerplay to contain the batters and were inconsistent with their lines and lengths. Arundhati Reddy did manage to provide the first breakthrough, but India could not build on it. However, the young Vaishnavi Sharma was excellent through the middle overs and, despite a few chances going begging, kept her composure to pick up a couple of key wickets, including that of the Sri Lankan skipper. Reddy added another to her name and Sree Charani chipped in with one, but the catching and fielding were quite sloppy, an area that has been a concern for some time and one that this side needs to improve.
Earlier in the game, India Women posted a mammoth total on the board, courtesy of a pair of fantastic half-centuries from Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana, who added 162 runs for the opening stand. In the process, Smriti brought up 10,000 international runs and became the fastest Indian women’s player to reach the landmark, surpassing Mithali Raj. Richa Ghosh was promoted up the order and chipped in with a quick-fire cameo, once again showcasing her power and ability to finish strongly. It was a tough outing for the Sri Lanka Women bowlers, but Malsha Shehani and Nimasha Meepage managed to pick up a wicket each.
Sri Lanka Women got off to a flyer in the chase, with Hasini Perera leading the charge, but once again she failed to convert her start, falling for 33 off just 20 balls. They went toe to toe with India early on, scoring 60 in the Powerplay and even going 10 runs ahead of the hosts at the halfway mark. Chamari Athapaththu played a captain’s knock but unfortunately fell soon after reaching her fifty. Sri Lanka managed a couple of 50-plus partnerships at the top, but then lost their way in the middle overs, something that has been a recurring issue in this series. Still, all the batters showed intent and the ability to score quickly and find boundaries, but they needed a bit more depth and composure, eventually falling short by 30 runs.
India Women continue their winning momentum to go 4-0 up in the series. However, full credit to Sri Lanka Women, who gave a good account of themselves while chasing a mammoth target and, in the process, registered their highest-ever total in this format. It was a spirited effort despite the result, and the positives from this performance should give them plenty of confidence going forward.
