So, India landed the first punch in Manchester, England returned a mild one back in Cardiff and then the Men in Blue delivered the knockout blow here in Bristol. They take the 3-match T20I series 2-1 and will be full of confidence heading into the ODI series. First match is on the 12th of July in Nottingham at 12.30 pm local (11.30 am GMT). India captain, Virat Kohli says that the comeback from the bowlers was outstanding. Feels that a score of 225-230 was on the cards but he credits his bowlers for restricting them to much less. States that his bowlers have good skills and they executed their plans to perfection. Adds that he is proud of his boys. Informs that Pandya is a very confident cricketer - both with bat and ball. Opines that the way he came back after being hit for 22 in the first over is what you want to see as a captain. Adds that getting 33 in quick time was the icing on the cake. Backs his decision to not play Kuldeep Yadav as he feels that every bowler suffered here. Announces that they want to continue trying different things going ahead. Expresses that it is great to have a series win at the start of the tour and they will be aiming to build upon this.
England captain, Eoin Morgan says that it was a tremendous start with the bat. Appreciates Roy and Buttler for setting a great platform but rues the fact that the following batsmen couldn't capitalize. Credits India for bowling well. Opines that they were below par on a ground where the pitch is flat and the boundaries are short. Adds that it was a tough ground to defend on. Feels that teams like India and Pakistan have a huge fan following and they are used to it. Mentions that this series has had three different tests for them. Reckons that Trent Bridge has been a good ground for them. Informs that they have lost a few tosses there in the recent past but the result has gone their way. Ends by saying that the toss will be less important.
Man of the Match and Man of the Series, Rohit Sharma says that assessing the conditions at the start was important. Mentions that once they saw off the new ball, they knew that the wicket was good and the boundaries were small. States that when he bats, he likes to take his time and not panic too much. Stresses the importance of spending time in the middle as it helps him to make up anytime during the innings. Also adds that it is crucial to assess the bowlers. Praises Hardik Pandya for his batting skills. Adds that he has played some good knocks for a few years now. Also credits him for his bowling and feels that he is a fearless individual.
When Hardik Pandya arrived at the crease, the tourists needed 48 off 31 balls. With Rohit Sharma at the other end batting on 83, the ball was still firmly in India's court. A quiet over followed after Kohli's wicket but that didn't disturb India's progress much. Jake Ball went for 15 runs in the 17th over and that opened the floodgates. The Sharma-Pandya combo hammered the required runs with ease and achieved the target with 8 balls to spare. It was that kind of a day when you are not supposed to talk too much about the bowling, unless the bowler's name is Hardik Pandya. He also started on a wrong note by conceding 22 in his first over but then in the next three overs he picked 4 wickets by giving away only 16 runs. The Indian all-rounder has warmed up well for this tour.
198 on any ground is a challenging total, even a match-winning one, but not here in Bristol where the boundaries are on the shorter side. India lost a couple of wickets inside the Powerplay but never compromised on the asking run-rate. Rohit Sharma held one end with all the class and elegance and along with his skipper Virat Kohli, he raised an 89-run stand off just 57 balls. England did manage to remove Kohli from the crease but failed to create a big enough opening to trouble the visiting team.
Where England lost the match? Umm... From 103/1 in 9.1 overs to 198/9 in 20 overs. They fell short of a challenging total in spite of having a strong launching pad. Reminds me of a phrase - When you aim high, you set yourself up to fall far! The approach while batting for the Englishmen was to keep going for runs even if wickets were falling. Cannot fault them for doing so on a stamp size ground but then they should have planned it in a better manner. Also, one should give credit where it's due. The Indian bowlers who were under the cosh after taking a hammering showed a lot of character by bouncing back.
Emphatic win for India! Rohit Sharma was the architect of it as he stroked a magnificent century. Not to forget Hardik Pandya though. First he did it with the ball by picking a 4-fer and then played a nice cameo to make India's path smooth to a series win. Clinical stuff from the Men in Blue.
