Right then. That is all that we have from this game. The warm-up games are done but we will have the two group stage games on Thursday, 21st October 2021. First, we will have the clash between Bangladesh and Papua New Guinea at 2 pm local (10 am GMT), followed by the game between Scotland and Oman at 6 pm local (2 pm GMT). Do join us then. Cheers!
Earlier on in the first innings. After deciding to bat, the Afghanistan batters did well to put up an above par score on the board, with 189/5. All thanks to the half-century knocks by their opening pair, followed by some handy cameos by the middle order. Their bowlers stepped up to the task and defended the score successfully in the end.
The batters did not turn up to the occasion for West Indies. Mohammad Nabi managed to spin the web around the top-order and got rid of three batsmen early on. Lendl Simmons was sent back on a duck. While, Lewis and Hetmyer went cheaply. Then Roston Chase and Pooran stitched a crucial partnership to take their team to safer shores. After 10 overs, Afghanistan were 100/1, while West Indies saw themselves at 50/3. They were already 50 runs behind, and some dot balls and some rare boundaries meant that the run rate kept creeping up. Pooran skittled out, as he looked to go big and cool down the run rate. Chase and Russell knocked some runs in the end, but the latter fell short. In the end, West Indies were defeated by 56 runs.
It was the NABI show with his magic arm. He got rid of both the openers, Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis as well as the hard-hitting Shimron Hetmyer. After 6.3 overs, West Indies were at a teetering position at 27/3. While, Mohammad Nabi ended with the figures of (4-2-2-3), which included two maiden-wicket overs. He was in some top-notch form. He was supported well by Mujeeb Ur Rahman during the Powerplay and kept the run rate within control. There was a patch when a partnership was brewing, but Karim Janat made sure to get the breakthrough. Naveen picked up a wicket in the final over to get rid of Andre Russell. It was a demanding victory for the Afghans.
Another disappointing show by the defending champions and this will be their second defeat in the warm-up games. They would hope their fortune to turn around at the mega event. Afghanistan, on the other hand, have certainly managed to iron the chink of their last game, as their batters did the job for them in this game. It was a tremendous performance by Afghanistan.
