Jayden Seales To Kamindu Mendis
FOUR! That's the first run off Seales after 20 deliveries. Of course, there was a big gap of close to an hour between this over and his previous one, but still, for the record. Overpitched, around off, Kamindu Mendis comes forward and drives it straight back past the bowler and then the non-striker, beating mid on with consummate ease.
Big chat. Bowling coach Ravi Rampaul and the injured Kemar Roach are having an intense chat with Jayden Seales around the boundary line. All the three look extremely animated and it has to be something around the bowling lengths by the West Indies. Talking about Seales, he is back on. 5-3-9-0 so far.

Full and straight, Kamindu Mendis gets across but works it straight to square leg.
This will be a big innings and series for Kamindu Mendis. He is a very good talent, averaging close to 58 in Test cricket, but is highly inconsistent. He registered twin centuries against New Zealand in Galle, way back in 2024, but post that, he has crossed 50 just once in his previous 13 innings. Pretty obvious that the average is skewed because of those twin tons, but at the same time those knocks also indicate the wealth of talent that he possesses. All about taking it to the next level and be more consistent.

FOUR! Well, that's a first for Sri Lanka in this innings - consecutive boundaries. Slightly short of a length, outside off, Lahiru Udara waits for the ball to arrive and dabs it behind point for a boundary. 50 IS UP FOR SRI LANKA.
The camera pans onto Alzarri Joseph, who is ready to come back onto the field. So must have been a hydration break. Still, don't understand the reason for his grumpiness. Good for West Indies if he can channel that grumpiness into his bowling.

DRINKS BREAK. 12 overs in the first hour. You can add a bit of stoppage for Dinesh Chandimal's finger injury check by the physio and the LBW review against Lahiru Udara. Still, the over rate is nothing short of abysmal. West Indies are calmly going through their proceedings with absolutely no hurry in trying to stick to the prescribed mark of 15 overs per hour. They have bowled well, no doubt, but both of their wickets have come through sloppiness from the Sri Lankans. One was a wicket off a short and wide ball outside off, while the other was off a half volley on middle and leg. Same bowler-fielder combination on both occasions. The Lankans have kind of self-inflicted their own wounds but in this sorry state, they have a positive ray in Lahiru Udara, who is looking to catch on anything which is slightly astray. He has faced 39 balls for his 27, with a pretty decent strike rate of close to 70. He has been beaten a few times, but he has not allowed that to deter him. Talking about the West Indies, an on-air graph shows that the hosts have pitched only 15 percent of their deliveries in the fuller length zone, with around 64 percent coming in the area between good and short. A critic will call this an absolute waste of the new ball but the scorecard will not say so. Let's see how they alter their lengths with the semi-new ball.

WEST INDIES LOSE A REVIEW. A good ball though and not a bad call to review. Excellent decision from umpire Paul Reiffel first up. On a good length, outside off, Lahiru Udara stood back in his crease and looked to flick it to the leg side but the ball came back in a long way and beat the bat. He got hit on the pads and that prompted a massive appeal for LBW. Reiffel shook his head and the bowler coaxed Chase into taking the review. Ball Tracking projected it to be bouncing over the top of the stumps.

Shamar Joseph To Dinesh Chandimal OUT!
OUT! CAUGHT! Shamar has 2 and shall we say, both have come off loose deliveries! Just imagine this. You are a batter. That too, from the subcontinent. You get a half volley and that too, on the pads. It is offering you a buffet. Chandimal's eyes light up on seeing that buffet ball and he gets across a touch to flick it away, but dear me, finds the man stationed at short mid-wicket positioned just for that stroke! It is Brandon King once again, who makes no mistake, picking up his second catch of the match as well. Cannot call this an unlucky dismissal. This is no significant contribution from the surface. Chandimal knew that there was a man stationed for an aerial flick, but he did not mind to keep the ball down. Should have done batter. Back to the pavilion now. SRI LANKA ARE 25/2!

Interesting thoughts going on around on social media. This is regarding Sri Lanka's decision at the toss. While Badree mentioned about the cracks, some fans are saying that when in doubt, go with your strengths and clearly, the skipper feels that batting is their better bet.

FOUR! Third boundary in 3 overs! Full and straight, Udara flicks it comfortably over mid-wicket and the ball, albeit not racing through, finds its way to the fence, as it does not find any human obstruction.

Shamar Joseph To Lahiru Udara
EDGED, FOUR! Fortuitous for the batter. Full and wide outside off, Lahiru Udara throws his bat at it and gets a thick outside edge. The ball flies through the slips, just to the right of the diving right and races to the deep third fence.

Shamar Joseph To Lahiru Udara
Dangerous ploy. Shamar keeps it full and straight but Lahiru, for some reason, chooses to play back to this ball, when he should have been playing forward. The ball pitches and skids through and luckily for the batter, he is able to get his bat down in time to work it to the leg side.

Right decision or wrong? There are already quite a few murmurs on Sri Lanka's decision to bat first on this pitch. As per a few experts, given the grass on the surface, it would have been advisable to bowl first and extract as much juice as possible, first up. But Samuel Badree has a different take. He opines that if the Lankans manage to get through this opening session and bat well in their first innings, get a good score, then, they can work on the cracks to deteriorate and pile pressure on the hosts. It is all about setting the best foot forward. Meanwhile, it will be Shamar Joseph to share the new ball.

We are all set for action then. The players are out in the middle, with Nishan Madushka and Lahiru Udara set to open for the Lankans. On the bowling front, it is the guy who is sitting on 99 Test wickets - Jayden Seales - who will set the ball rolling in action. Three slips and a gully waiting with Madushka on strike. Here we go!
I enjoy coaching - That's the first statement made by Gary Kirsten, the head coach of Sri Lanka, as he catches up for an interview with Samuel Badree. On his journey so far, Kirsten says that it is fun to be with another international team. Admits that these are early days, but calls it an enjoyable process in getting to understand the team and its character. On the blueprint for Sri Lanka to get back to the top in world cricket, Gary says that they are a proud cricketing nation. Adds that there is a lot of talent in this country and they have enough experience to know what it takes to be consistent at this level. Further says that most teams these days are measured by their performance away from home. Stresses that this team too, can be successful across the world and it is all about getting the players to be consistent. On what different can they do in this Test, the coach replies that the Lankans started well with both bat and ball in the previous Test, but could not penetrate enough when needed. So, he believes that they need to come up with some new thinking, make some new changes and go to Plans B and C as any good team would and be on the money right from the first ball.
Green and cracks - That's the summary by Mali Richards, son of the legendary Sir Viv Richards, while doing the PITCH REPORT. He goes down and notices a tinge of green on this surface, informing that it is not as greeny as it was in the first Test and hence, runs could be had here. However, he cautions that it would be challenging for batters, as a few cracks can be seen on Day 1 itself. So he expects variable bounce but all the same, predicts pacers to dominate again.
West Indies (Playing XI) - John Campbell, Brandon King, Kavem Hodge, Amir Jangoo, Shai Hope (WK) (IN FOR JOSHUA DA SILVA), Roston Chase (C), Justin Greaves, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales and Anderson Phillip (IN FOR KEMAR ROACH). So contrary to expectations, the home side has gone for a like-for-like replacement for Roach.
Sri Lanka (Playing XI) - Nishan Madushka, Lahiru Udara (IN FOR PATHUM NISSANKA), Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis (WK), Dhananjaya de Silva (C), Kamindu Mendis, Sonal Dinusha, Milan Rathnayaka, Isitha Wijesundara (DEBUT) (IN FOR KASUN RAJITHA), Prabath Jayasuriya (IN FOR LAHIRU KUMARA) and Asitha Fernando.
Quite happy - That's the reaction from the captain of West Indies, ROSTON CHASE, when asked about what would he have done had he won the toss. Chase adds that there is a little bit of grass on the surface, so he would be looking for his fast bowlers to utilize that. Samuel Badree then asks the question that's apparently perturbing the nation - Who's playing? To this, Roston replies that there are two changes. Joshua Da Silva misses out and a fit Shai Hope comes in, and will don the gloves as well. On the second change, it is an expected one, with Kemar Roach suffering a hamstring niggle, so as a precaution, he has been rested. In his place, Anderson Phillip has been given a go. On the message to the team for this Test, the skipper says that West Indies want to be a consistent Test-playing nation. Hence, they don't want to fall back on their laurels and rather, give their best in this new game and win.
Pitch looks dry - That's the reply from the skipper of Sri Lanka, DHANANJAYA DE SILVA, on being asked about his reason to bat first. On the three changes to his side, de Silva informs that those are primarily because of injuries. On the plans to do well in this Test, Dhananjaya says that basically, his side has to bowl well and take 20 wickets to win a Test match. Adds that the Lankans actually batted well in the first innings of the last Test, getting to 300-odd, so it is all about the bowling stepping up.
TOSS - Bright and sunny conditions welcome us to Antigua, with a few scattered clouds. So it is time for the flip of the coin. The two captain walk out for the middle for the same - Roston Chase and Dhananjaya de Silva. Chase gives the coin a flip, Tails is the call from Dhananjaya and it is a Tail. SRI LANKA ELECT TO BAT.
Rain in the air? We are hearing so. But it is not one which should see you looking at the covers and hoping for a resumption. Scattered showers are forecast across all five days of this Test, but those should not be more than a sharp short burst, just like we see seamers bowl their spells these days. Let's hope we get a start on time and at least, have this morning session uninterrupted, because that will be the time when the moisture on the pitch and the conditions will suit the seamers the most during the day.
Full of confidence - And this time, we are indeed talking about Sri Lanka. Hard to use this title or phrase when you have battered by an innings and 217 runs. But the visitors have shown their confidence, announcing their playing XI well in advance, making three changes - IN - Lahiru Udara, Prabath Jayasuriya and Isitha Wijesundara (DEBUT) | OUT - Pathum Nissanka (INJURED), Lahiru Kumara (INJURED) and Kasun Rajitha. So A - The Lankans are not quite at their best in terms of their gameplay and B - they are actually short of quality players, with their squad depth being tested. Still, announcing their playing XI is a good mind game, showing the opposition that even though their backs are against the wall, they are not backing down.
Is all well though? Not in entirety. One of the firing seamers, Kemar Roach, is nursing a hamstring niggle and Keemo Paul has already been added to the squad, suggesting that Roach is likely to sit out of this match. If Paul does come in straightaway, he would provide a dual replacement, considering that he has batting skills, but he is more of a batting allrounder. So West Indies might just fall short of an out-and-out seam replacement for Roach.
The smiling assassin - Hmmm... don't blame you if you rolled back your years and remembered a wily old off spinner, bamboozling one and all with his guile. That was the name given to the great Muttiah Muralidaran, by another great, Tony Greig. But we are not talking about Murali here. We are talking about Shamar Joseph. He thunders in, bowls at extreme raw pace, but once the ball is delivered, there is a massive grin writ across his face. With 26 wickets at an average of 16.42, Shamar has been the leader for the West Indies in this current World Test Championship cycle and that average, is second to only New Zealand's Jacob Duffy (15.43), who leads the list of pacers with the best average in this cycle, with a minimum of 100 overs bowled. Sorry, Matt Henry, for those who followed New Zealand's tour of England. While the others have been around the circuit for a while now, it won't be wrong to say that it has been Shamar Joseph's induction into the Test side which has given the Men from the Caribbean a massive lift. Don't forget, the hosts did give the Aussies a run for their money in the red-ball format when the Kangaroos toured here last, but unfortunately, their batters let them down. After the batting display in the first Test, hope springs around for a revival of the past, once again.
By the rivers of Babylon... There we sat down. But we did not weep. In fact, connoisseurs of the game were watching with bated breadth. Kemar Roach - 6 scalps | Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph - 4 wickets apiece | Justin Greaves and Alzarri Joseph - 3 wickets apiece. That's all the 20 wickets gone to pace from the home side in the previous Test. And of those 20, leave aside Greaves, the other four were spitting fire, reminding of the few watching, that pace is back in the Caribbean. Sri Lanka might have been caught napping a touch, losing by an innings and 217 runs - their second innings defeat in their last 5 Tests - but while they gather and regroup to try and level the series, dare we say, they might get more of the same game as West Indies play dragonball.
A week to remember... Could have been. After a fairly decent run in the last week at the Women's T20 World Cup, there were talks about West Indies Women rewinding the clock back to 2016. And then, with a dream win in the semis, get back the trophy on Sunday. Add to it, given the way the Men's side crushed their opponents in the last Test, it might have not been an unfair ask to wrap this Test and series by Sunday as well, ending their long drought of series wins in this format. Sadly, one of the dreams have been crushed, with the Women knocked out, but the dream for the Men's side continues to roll - a series win after 3 years overall and after 4 years at home. Hello and a warm welcome to the opening day of the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka, or going by the new name, the Sobers-Tissera Trophy, in Antigua.
... SECOND TEST, DAY 1 ...
A series on the line - West Indies and Sri Lanka return to the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua for the second and final Test of the Sobers-Tissera Trophy, with plenty still on the line despite the hosts' emphatic victory in the series opener. West Indies will be eager to complete a 2-0 sweep and build on the confidence gained from one of their most dominant Test wins in recent years, while Sri Lanka arrive with their backs against the wall, desperate to level the series and revive their World Test Championship campaign. With both sides entering the contest on one WTC win, every point could prove crucial as the cycle progresses. West Indies finally find their spark - West Indies finally produced the complete Test performance they had been searching for. After a difficult run in the World Test Championship, where victories have been few and far between, the hosts showcased exactly what they are capable of when both their batting and bowling click together. Their pace attack once again laid the platform, while the batting unit showed resilience and composure after finding themselves under pressure early in the innings. Heroes across the park - The first Test was transformed by an unexpected hero. With Shai Hope ruled out on the eve of the match through a shoulder injury, Amir Jangoo grabbed his opportunity in spectacular fashion, producing a sensational 233. Alongside captain Roston Chase's magnificent 194, the pair added a world-record 401-run partnership for the sixth wicket, turning a precarious position into complete dominance. The bowlers then ensured the hard work was not wasted, with Kemar Roach reaching the landmark of 300 Test wickets and Jayden Seales, Justin Greaves and the rest of the attack dismantling Sri Lanka to seal an innings-and-217-run victory. Adding to the hosts' confidence, Hope has now been cleared to return for the second Test, giving the selectors a welcome headache as West Indies look to build on their first World Test Championship win of the cycle. Sri Lanka need their leaders - Sri Lanka know they are a far better side than what they showed for large parts of the opening Test. Their batting has often relied on experienced campaigners to shoulder the responsibility, and while Dhananjaya de Silva's century and Dinesh Chandimal's half-century hinted at a competitive first-innings total, the visitors were unable to build on that platform. Their bowlers also created opportunities after reducing West Indies to 168/5, but failing to separate Chase and Jangoo allowed the game to slip completely out of their grasp. With just one win from their opening three World Test Championship matches, Sri Lanka cannot afford to fall further behind in the standings. The experienced core will once again be expected to lead the response, while the bowlers, particularly Milan Rathnayake and Prabath Jayasuriya, must find a way to apply sustained pressure throughout the innings. Above all, the visitors need to produce a much stronger all-round performance if they are to level the series. History favours the Islanders - The head-to-head record between these two sides paints a favourable picture for Sri Lanka, who have won 11 of their 25 Tests against West Indies, with the hosts managing just five victories while the remaining nine matches have ended in draws. However, West Indies have a golden opportunity to rewrite that narrative this week. Having already taken a 1-0 lead, they stand on the brink of their first Test series victory over Sri Lanka since defeating them at home in 2003. It is a chance to end a wait spanning more than two decades, while Sri Lanka will be desperate to avoid conceding another piece of unwanted history. Team form (Last 5 Test matches, most recent first) - WI - WLLDL | SL - LWDLL. Who will have the final say? Confidence is flowing through the West Indies camp after a record-breaking performance, but they know backing it up is the next challenge. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have little choice but to respond after a disappointing all-round display. With valuable World Test Championship points, a series result and plenty of pride at stake, another fascinating battle awaits in Antigua.
