Right then, Hugh Weibgen collects that elusive trophy and is joined by his jubilant teammates as they celebrate wildly before getting on the podium for a group photograph. The celebrations will surely continue long into the night and what a memorable 2024 ICC Under-19 World Cup we have witnessed. We have seen the birth of some fantastic individual players and we saw the minnows beat the big teams for the very first time among a lot of exciting and quality cricket action. With that said, we have come to the end of our coverage of the Under-19 World Cup and hope that you enjoyed our coverage. Until next time then, take care and goodbye!
And now, the Under-19 World Champions, the players of Australia Under-19 come forward and collect their winning medals and Hugh Weibgen, the skipper comes up for a chat. He says that it is unbelievable and he is so proud of the boys and the coaches and a lot of hard work went into it over the last few months. Adds that everyone was open to do whatever they were asked to and to put on 250 plus was brilliant and the bowlers backed it up. On Harjas Singh, he says that he is a class player and good on the coaches to persist with him and he stepped up in a big match. On his opponents, he says that India are a class side and is happy to have come out on top. Ends by saying that there are players on the team who will definitely play for the senior national side in the near future.
Next up, the players of the runners-up team, India Under-19 come forward and collect their medals after which the skipper, Uday Saharan comes in for a chat. He says that he is proud of his boys and the fighting spirit they showed from the start till the end. Reckons that they played a few rash shots and needed to spend time in the middle. States that they were prepared for it but lacked in execution. Ends by saying that there have been plenty of learnings from this tournament and will take these learnings to get better as an individual.
Kwena Maphaka, the South African quick, is adjudged as the Player of the Tournament for his enthralling bowling right throughout the competition. He says that it really means a lot and he put in a lot of hard work and the only blemish is that he couldn't take his side all the way. Adds that he has worked on his inswing a lot and that brought him a great deal of success. On his chat with Anrich Nortje, he says that they were just talking about the future a bit. Mentions that it will be amazing it he is able to play for the senior team but it will require a lot of hard work.
Mahli Beardman is adjudged the Player of the Match in the Final for his brilliant spell with the ball. He says that it is a pretty surreal feeling and it has not sunk in yet in. Mentions that they have been working for this for a long time and the hard work has paid off. Mentions that India have been incredible and knew it was going to be a good battle. Shares that he has been working on the mental side of things with his coach and bowling according to the field. Mentions that Callum Vidler has been incredible for them. Ends by saying that his future goals are to play in the Big Bash League and play for his state side.
First up, the officials are presented with their mementos.
The Presentation ceremony...
Tom Straker and Charlie Anderson are the next to be interviewed. Straker says that it is a great feeling and they have been working for this moment over the past year. Shares that the pace quartet enjoys playing with each other. Anderson says that it is an awesome feeling and you do not get to play the final every day. Ends by saying that he may not lead the celebrations but will surely be joining the boys.
Callum Vidler and Mahli Beardman are up next. Callum says that it is a crazy feeling and this is a memory he will cherish for the rest of his life. States that there is no better feeling to do it with these guys. On who is the quickest among the four pacers, he replies that it does not matter and all that matters is they have won the World Cup. Beardman says that this win means a lot and he can put into words what he is feeling right now. Adds that it is surreal and has not kicked in yet.
Sam Konstas and Harkirat Bajwa are the first ones in for a chat. Sam says that he is at a loss for words and beating India in the final is a great effort. Mentions that they stuck to plans and executed them well. Harkirat says that it is an unbelievable effort and it is an amazing performance. Says that it is nice to have so many bowlers to back you up.
Let's now join a few of the victorious players for a quick word...
India Under-19 will be pretty disappointed as they put on back-to-back under-par batting performances and the holes in the batting lineup were exploited by the opposition bowlers. With the ball as well, they couldn't control the middle phase after a decent start and the spinners failed to make much of an impact. Raj Limbani and Naman Tiwari the two quicks got wickets again but the latter was pretty expensive. Coming to the batting, the opening stand yet again wasn't there as Arshin Kulkarni got out early and then Musheer Khan and Adarsh Singh went into defensive mode. Khan got out looking to up the ante and then two heroes from the last game, skipper Uday Saharan and Sachin Dhas too fell in quick succession. Adarsh Singh did do well to keep going from one end and later on it was a cameo from Murugan Abhishek that kept India just floating in the game. In the end, though, it was always a bridge too far once they lost those four wickets and were second-best throughout the game.
Australia Under-19 were on the brink in their semi-final clash but somehow made it through to the final and right from the toss, they seemed like they had the belief to win this one. Opting to bat first, they lost an early wicket but their two stalwarts in the form of Harry Dixon and skipper Hugh Weibgen built a good stand and throughout the course of the first innings, they had 50-plus partnerships and it was Harjas Singh who had a lean tournament that scored big in the match that mattered the most. With the ball then, they were sensational yet again. Charlie Anderson came back into the team and bowled well but it was once again the fiery, Callum Vidler who troubled the opposition in that first Powerplay and got wickets too. Tom Straker kept up the good work and then Mahli Beardman came in and ripped through the Indian order and even Rafael Macmillan, the off-spinner played a big role as he got three wickets and out-bowled the Indian spinners. All in all, they had the highest total ever in an Under-19 World Cup final and then they backed it up with the ball as well.
AUSTRALIA ARE UNDER-19 WORLD CHAMPIONS FOR A FOURTH TIME! What a win for Australia Under-19 and they have kept their best for the last. And what a couple of years it has been for Australian Cricket as they now hold the Women's T20 and ODI World Cup, the Men's World Test Championship, the Men's ODI World Cup and now the Men's Under-19 World Cup as well. The 14-year Under-19 World Cup drought has finally ended and Hugh Weibgen has led his side to glory. Spare a thought for India Under-19 who continue to dominate the Under-19 stage by reaching a fifth consecutive final but it wasn't enough this time around.
