The final stage of league games of the T20 World Cup! Just 2 matches to go, before the knockouts arrive. Pakistan meet Thailand at 3 pm local (0400 GMT), followed by the West Indies-South Africa clash at 7 pm local (0800 GMT). Join us on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2020 for all the action from the Sydney Showground Stadium. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!
Phew! That was a long presentation, wasn't it? Listening to Nasser Hussain is great. Lots of questions, opening a book of knowledge. Group A is done and we have the two semi-finalists in India and Australia. They now await the order of their opponents. England and South Africa are confirmed from Group B but it will take us to watch the final game to understand who finishes on top.
Victorious Australian skipper, Meg Lanning is all smiles. Feels that her team handled the nerves really well in a crunch game. Praises Beth Mooney and the finish given by Ellyse Perry and Rachael Haynes. On the underrated Mooney, Meg says that she is no longer underrated and is a world-class player. Admits that the cameo from Perry and Haynes was what turned out to be the difference, calling them world class players. Praises Georgia Wareham for her excellent bowling. On the news regarding Ellyse Perry, Meg says that she has not heard much and reckons that it looked very bad but hopes that she is okay. On too much cricket in the women's arena leading to injuries, Lanning says that is how it is and they need to cope up with it. Feels that the Bangladesh game turned things around for her side and they got confident. Believes that her side has what it needs to handle the pressure of a home World Cup.
New Zealand captain, Sophie Devine, says that they allowed the Aussies to get away probably 5-10 runs extra with the ball. But then says that cricket is an easier game in hindsight. On holding Amelia Kerr back, Sophie says that she did that because Australia had wickets in hand. Admits that chasing has been a problem but they have shown the fight to take it till the end. They showed it against India and even here, albeit, she feels that the last ball was a no ball. Smiles and says that Australia were definitely the better team and deserved to win. Does not want to complain and believes that in a World Cup, you do play the best teams at some point or the other. Adds that it is a different issue that the best teams are in this group but does not want to lament. On being asked as to how can they become the best team, Devine says that they can do that by playing more cricket. Understands that this World Cup is over but the preparations can be better for the next. Ends by saying that New Zealand are no longer a part of this World Cup but she will be keenly following the remaining games.
GEORGIA WAREHAM HAS BEEN NAMED THE PLAYER OF THE MATCH. Says that she felt confident from the way she started. That got her going. Adds that the Kiwis are dangerous players and can take the game away. Is happy to put her hand up to contribute. On being asked whose idea was it to review the Suzie Bates dismissal, Georgia smiles and shyly says that she was confident. On whether it was a plan to entice Sophie Devine to come down the track and bowl wide outside off, Wareham agrees. Admits that she is nervous regarding the semi-final but is geared up all the same.
Bowling always has been the strong point for Australia. It was so, even in this game. But they lost Ellyse Perry in the middle of the game and her remaining 2 overs had to be bowled by Ashleigh Gardner, who nearly gifted the match away. That shows the dependence of Australia on Perry. The continued absence of Sophie Molineux is also hurting them for the exertion of control. But in this quarter-final, Jess Jonassen and Georgia Wareham stood out. The leggie Wareham was the one who put the pressure on the Kiwis, scalping 3 wickets while Jonassen complimented her nicely. The duo's combined figures read 8-0-45-4. The others were off and on, not quite being consistent. Please stay tuned for the presentation...
New Zealand started off decently but as has been the case with most teams in this tournament, their middle order was very brittle. Their batting has all been about Rachel Priest, Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates - so if the top 3 fail, the middle order stutters. It did so here as well. Bates' wicket did not actually lead to a collapse but the Aussies applied the choke. Even Sophie Devine could not find an answer to that and eventually, the wickets started to fall. Katey Martin played a decent cameo but that was more because of some shoddy bowling and poor fielding in the death overs by the home side.
Australia welcomed the opportunity to bat first on a slow deck with open hands. They batted like there was no tomorrow, wanting to smash each and every ball. Beth Mooney played the anchor role with players batting around her while Ellyse Perry and Rachael Haynes finished off the job decently. Amelia Kerr kept the Kiwis in the game with a spell of 4-0-22-1 but the other bowlers got a pounding.
So! Where was the match lost? At the toss? In all likelihood. Eyebrows were raised when Sophie Devine elected to chase on this deck but halfway through the second innings, the game had slowed down. The game got close because Ellyse Perry was injured and Australia made a mess of things in the last over but if proper professional cricket was played, the hosts were always in front.
Australia join India into the semi-finals. Nearly let it slip, didn't they? They bowled brilliantly, but towards the end, just took it a bit too casually. New Zealand, be it Black Caps or White Ferns are never pushovers (of course, Chris Martin is an exception). They fought and fought and fought and almost pulled off the unthinkable. Hats off. Take a bow.

Ashleigh Gardner To Katey Martin
DROPPED, SIX, BUT NOT A NO BALL! Meg Lanning, Ashleigh Gardner and thousands of Aussie fans would have had their hearts in their mouth. Just imagine if this had been a no ball. The next ball would have been a Free Hit and only 4 would have been needed! A high full toss, outside off, Martin comes down the track and heaves it towards deep mid-wicket. Nichola Carey comes running across to her right, but takes it very casually and fluffs the catch. Now, the Aussies do not care, they believe that the game is over. New Zealand are not going anywhere. The umpires get together and check. It is for the boundary. Replays confirm that the ball has landed flush on the ropes. Now, Martin asks whether it was a no ball or not. The umpire obliges by referring it upstairs again and the replay shows the ball to be dipping down, around knee height. So, the ball is legal and AUSTRALIA WIN BY 4 RUNS!
IS THAT A NO BALL? The umpires are checking. Nichola Carey has dropped a sitter at the boundary. It is a six but what about the no ball? They check now. It is a legal delivery. Australia scrape through.

NOT OUT! Peterson is safe! It is tossed up on leg, Peterson pulls it towards the deep mid-wicket region and calls for two. The fielder there has a throw at the keeper's end who collects it and whips the bails off. Peterson who is running to the danger end stretches herself as the bails are whipped off. The umpire takes it upstairs and Peterson is inside the crease there.

Georgia Wareham To Suzie Bates OUT!
OUT! LBW! What a review! Golden call from the bowler. She was the only one confident. A short ball, around middle, Bates looked to pull but missed. Now, she was hit around the groin and Wareham went up in an appeal. The keeper supported her but was not convinced that it is out, when the umpire shook the head. Meg Lanning came across and Healy was smiling. She was not sure about the review. Wareham was adamant that the review be taken and voila! Ball Tracker shows the ball to be hitting the middle stump! Excellent review, gutsy call. Cannot blame the umpire for not giving that. Looked too high. 103 more needed from 72 balls.

Jess Jonassen To Rachel Priest OUT!
OUT! LBW! Jonassen provides the break. Very full and very straight. Priest initially looks to slog but then changes her shot to try and flick. She misses and is hit on the back pad, right in front of the stumps. The umpire raises her finger on the appeal. Priest looks at Devine regarding the review but is sent on her way. Ball Tracker shows it to be crashing into leg stump. New Zealand need 131 more from 97 balls.
