Inn Break
Right then, that is it from the 1st ODI between Australia and South Africa and for the remaining two games, we move to the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay, down South. The hosts will look to bounce back and force a decider but for now, the Proteas are in the driving seat. The 2nd ODI will be played on Friday, 22 August and will begin at 4.30 am GMT. However, you can join us a lot sooner for the build-up as well. Till then, take care and goodbye!
The victorious captain of South Africa, Temba Bavuma, is up for a chat now. He is delighted and says it was a good all-round performance by the boys. Reflects the wicket was a bit two-paced but they adapted nicely to the conditions. Feels that they put a competitive score on the board, and the bowlers backed up pretty well. Mentions it was not a bad toss to lose, but also admits that they too, didn't expect the ball to turn this much. Appreciates the way Keshav Maharaj bowled and was supported well by the rest of the bowlers as well. Shares that when you are playing against an opposition like Australia, you know they like to get pace on the bat and reflects that after assessing the conditions, they had the weapons with the spin and came off well for them. Also shares that while batting, their conversation was that the wicket is not going to get easier, and hence, they wanted to get around 300. Also highlights that even going by the stats, any score above 250 makes it challenging to chase.
The captain of Australia, Mitchell Marsh, says that Keshav Maharaj was outstanding throughout with the ball. He mentions that there was certainly a little more spin than they expected, but they had to take their hats off to someone like him as he won the game. He admits that it was a lack of confidence as a whole over the last period of time. He also says that they play spin well as a group, but Keshav bowled well and took some crucial wickets. On being asked about playing an extra spinner in the next game, Marsh says they will look at the conditions and decide based on that.
South Africa's Keshav Maharaj is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his stellar five-wicket haul. He says it feels surreal to get the first five-for of his ODI career. Reflects that he just tried to use the conditions to his benefit. On whether he expected the ball to stick and turn, Maharaj mentions that he tried to make full utilization of the surface and got the rewards. Also appreciates his fellow spinner and says his job was made easy by Prenelan Subrayen from the other end, who also bowled with control. Also feels that it was a good batting display on a tricky wicket and they are happy to take an early lead in the series.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Mitchell Marsh won yet another toss and opted to bowl first as usual. The pitch was on the drier side and the average score was under 250 in recent ODI matches here. However, South Africa were positive from the start and after seeing off the new ball, they started to fire. The top four laid down the foundation, with three of them going past the 50-run mark and a solid knock towards the death from Wiaan Mulder took to very close to the 300-run mark. As for Australia, their pacers fared decently with Josh Hazlewood remaining economical and Ben Dwarshuis picking up a couple of wickets but it was Travis Head who provided the crucial wickets and ended up with a four-fer.
The pitch did start to get better as the dew settled in and soon enough, the ball started to skid on rather than grip. However, the damage was already done by Keshav Maharaj. Ben Dwarshuis stitched together a steady stand along with his skipper, worth 71 runs, before Nandre Burger got him out softly. Burger also got the big fish in the form of Mitchell Marsh for 88 runs, and that was the last nail in the coffin for Australia as they were 8 for 174 and staring down a 100-run plus defeat at home for the first time since 1991, according to the on-air commentators. However, a bit of a late resistance from Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa made sure that it wasn't a 100-run plus defeat as Lungi Ngidi picked up the remaining two wickets and sealed the game for his side.
Keshav Maharaj came into the attack from the other end and just ripped through the Australian batting order and what was 60/0 became 75/5 in a flash as Maharaj got four wickets on the trot. He didn't stop there and made it a five-wicket haul as Australia were reduced to 89/6 in just 16.2 overs, with their skipper stranded at one end.
Australia will be disappointed with the loss, especially after the start their openers gave them inside the first Powerplay. Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh put on 60 runs in just 43 balls when Head got out. Debutant Prenelan Subrayen was the one who got the Proteas back in the game, and that wicket completely changed the game.
A comprehensive win for South Africa in the 1st ODI in Cairns and they have taken a vital 1-0 lead in this three-match series. A solid total on the board, followed by a strong display from their spinners and that was more than enough to beat the Aussies on their turf. This is South Africa's biggest win in terms of runs against Australia in Australia in an ODI game.

Lungi Ngidi To Adam Zampa OUT!
OUT! BOWLED'EM! That's it, done and dusted! Lungi Ngidi brings out another slower ball and bowls it full and on off. Adam Zampa is undone by the trajectory as the ball dips and goes off the inside edge. The ball then crashes into the stumps. South Africa win by 98 runs and Ngidi is elated, so are the Proteas as the tourists take an early lead in this three-match ODI series.

OUT! LBW! A huge appeal and given! That seemed to be missing leg to the naked eye but Australia do not have any reviews left and Nathan Ellis has to walk back. Lungi Ngidi brings out the off-cutter, bowling it into the deck and around middle. The ball pitches and nips back in. Ellis is taken aback and looks to pull but the ball stays low and gets hit on the back pad. South Africa are now just one wicket away from sealing the game.

Nandre Burger To Mitchell Marsh OUT!
OUT! EDGED AND GONE! CAUGHT BEHIND! Marsh perishes and Australia's last hope is gone now! This has been a brilliant comeback from Nandre Burger after being tonked all around the park in the first spell. A well-directed short ball from him, around off, climbing off the deck. Mitchell Marsh tries to smash the pull, but the ball is a bit too close to the body. Hence, Marsh does not get enough room to access that shot. Ends up getting a thick outside edge and Ryan Rickelton takes a regulation catch behind the stumps. Mitchell Marsh departs for 88 (96), Australia are 174/8. This now, in all fairness, looks a bridge too far for Australia.

DRINKS BREAK! This game seems to be done and dusted but South Africa will feel they should have already sealed the game by now. It's been a stiff resistance from Mitchell Marsh so far and for a long time, Ben Dwarshuis was giving him ample support. However, with just 3 wickets remaining and 123 still needed off 84 balls, Marsh will have to farm the strike and keep peppering the fence to build some pressure on the Proteas. South Africa will now be looking to bring their quicks back in and clean up the Aussie tail.

Ellis SURVIVES a close call! Aiden Markram bowls an off-break, full and around off, Eliis looks to play that across on the leg side, but gets beaten by the spin and wears it on the pads. A confident appeal from Markram, but the umpire gives it a NOT OUT, and after a long thought, South Africa decides to REVIEW that. The Snicko shows no evidence of the bat, and interestingly, the ball goes up to hit the top of leg stump, and the UMPIRE'S CALL saves Ellis on this occasion.
Reviewed! That seemed like an inside edge but Ryan Rickelton is sure that Nathan Ellis didn't hit it. Aiden Markram isn't sure and Temba Bavuma does take the review. The third umpire is called in and the ball might have just missed the inside edge. Snicko shows that there is a disturbance but not sure whether it's off the bat or not. The third umpire has a long, hard look at it and reckons that the ball is not hitting the bat and moves on to Ball Tracking, which shows the wickets as umpire's call. NOT OUT!

Just in the crease in time! Markram drifts this one into the batter, it lands around the off pole and spins away sharply. Ben Dwarshuis gets on the front foot and tries to drive on the initial line, but is beaten on the outside edge as the ball spins away. Ryan Rickelton collects it cleanly behind the stumps and flashes off the bails in a snap. A huge appeal for stumping and the on-field umpires send it upstairs to the third umpire to have a check. The side-on replay shows that Dwarshuis' back leg gets dragged outside the crease, but he is quick enough to plonk that back inside in time, before Rickelton dislodges the bails off.
Is that out? Not much of an appeal from Ryan Rickelton behind the stumps but the third umpire is called in to have a look. The replays roll in and it appears to be closer than expected but Ben Dwarshuis does have his back foot grounded inside the crease when the bails come off. NOT OUT!

DRINKS BREAK! This has been some performance from South Africa and in particular, from Keshav Maharaj. A maiden five-wicket haul in ODIs for him and Australia are looking down for the count. They still have four wickets in hand and their skipper is at the crease but with over 200 runs needed, Mitchell Marsh will need a Maxwell-esque performance, the one against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, to get his side even close to the target. The Proteas, on the other hand, will be looking to continue using spin until the dew settles in and try to bundle out the hosts as soon as possible. With that said, Ben Dwarshuis walks out to bat now.

Keshav Maharaj To Alex Carey OUT!
OUT! LBW! Keshav Maharaj has badly dented the Australian middle order here as he picks up his fourth wicket! Stays around the wickets and darts it very full, on the leg stump line. Alex Carey sits down to execute the premeditated paddle sweep, but the ball passes close to the bat and wears on the front boot. A huge, confident shout for LBW and Chris Gaffaney raises his finger up instantly! The Proteas are joyous but Alex Carey, after chatting with Marsh, goes upstairs to review it. Nothing on the Snicko and the Ball Tracking shows the ball to be pitching inside the line of the stumps, and is projected to crash on the off pole. A golden duck for Carey and Australia are 75/5.

Keshav Maharaj To Cameron Green OUT!
OUT! TIMBER! Keshav Maharaj is on a roll! Maharaj goes wide on the crease, and pushes through slower, full, and around middle and off. The ball just drifts in, lands, and then turns away to beat the outside edge before crashing onto the off pole, as Cameron Green looks to push that away on the off side, but ends up playing inside the line and hears the death rattle behind him. He departs for 3 (8) and Australia are reduced to 67/3.
Powerplay 2! South Africa are now allowed as many as 4 fielders outside the inner circle till the 40th over. The first Powerplay was probably even-steven with the Proteas coming back in with a couple of late wickets after Australia got off to a flier.

Keshav Maharaj To Marnus Labuschagne OUT!
OUT! LBW! Keshav Maharaj strikes in his very first over with a big wicket. He drops it full, around middle and leg, and bowls it a bit slower, which allows the ball to grip and turn. Marnus Labuschagne plays the wrong line and gets completely undone by the spin and bounce, and wears it on the back pad. The finger goes up on the united appeal from the Proteas. Marnus Labuschagne walks up to his captain, and after a long chat, decides to review this one! The Snicko shows no spike on that and the ball tracking shows the ball went onto the hits the top of off. Australia burn their review as the on-field decision stays. Marnus Labuschagne is disappointed as he departs for 1 (6) and from 60/0, Australia have slipped to 61/2.
Spin in tandem now. Keshav Maharaj is introduced into the attack now. He replaces Lungi Ngidi.

Prenelan Subrayen To Travis Head OUT!
OUT! STUMPED! Spin does the trick for the Proteas! Prenelan Subrayen goes wide on the crease, and offers flight on the ball. Lands it on a yard behind full length and just around the off stump line off. Seeing the flight, Travis Head gets lured and dances down the track in an attempt to smoke that downtown, but the ball goes straight on and he plays for the spin. It goes past the outside edge and Ryan Rickelton collects it neatly before whipping off the bails. Travis Head departs for 27 (24) and Australia are 60/1. This is the first time Head has been dismissed through a stumping in his entire ODI career.
