Used exclusively for hosting cricket matches, it hosted first of its kind on October 7, 1986 between India and Australia. It is one of the premier grounds in India for hosting first class cricket. The stadium is undergoing a redevelopment phase where it will become a part of a huge complex and the spectator capacity to 40,000. The VVIP suite with balconies facing the ground is a huge striking feature. The complex will now also have, basketball, tennis, volleyball, badminton and squash courts, a swimming pool and an indoor stadium.
