Graham Onions took five wickets on his debut on Thursday as England bowled out West Indies for 152, then reduced them to 32-2 in their second innings on the second day of the first Test.
West Indies remained 186 runs behind after following 25 short of the target for avoiding the follow on, with play cut short because of bad light.
Onions took 5-38 in the visitors first innings, including three wickets in one over. West Indies collapsed from 70-1, losing their final six wickets for just 35 runs off 52 balls.
Spinner Graeme Swann had Brendan Nash caught by Paul Collingwood at second slip, before Onions claimed three wickets in an over.
After beginning his Test bowling career with a delivery that was smacked to the boundary for four by Devon Smith, Onions responded by having Lendl Simmons caught at first slip by Andrew Strauss in the sixth over. Two deliveries later, Taylor nicked a ball to wicketkeeper Matt Prior before Onions had Sulieman Benn caught by Graeme Swann on the final ball of the over.
The first ball of Onions' seventh over then trapped Denesh Ramdin lbw and Collingwood then dropped Lionel Baker in the slips.
The innings should have ended on 139 when both Fidel Edwards and Baker found themselves at the same end. But instead of walking to the stumps to run either man out, Swann hurled the ball at Broad, who misfielded, resulting in overthrows.
Onions joined a select group of bowlers to record a five-wicket haul on his debut when Baker was given out lbw.
The visitors' second innings got off to a miserable start when captain Chris Gayle was dismissed without scoring, caught by Swann off James Anderson, before Sarwan failed again, playing on to his stumps for 1 to hand Anderson a second wicket.
Bad light then spared West Indies any further punishment, but England is now a heavy favorite to complete a victory inside three days.
England began the day on 289-7 and added 88 in the morning session for the loss of Bopara.
Bopara put on 93 for the eighth wicket with Swann, who went on to make his first ever Test half century, reaching 63 not out before he ran out of partners.
Fidel Edwards took 6-92, including two wickets off the first three balls after lunch to leave England all out on 377.
Gayle got the visitors' first innings off to a blistering start, hitting 28 off 34 balls until he played a fast ball from Broad on to his stumps.
Sarwan departed for just 13 and the momentum shifted decisively in England's favor when Swann took two wickets in as many balls, including the key wicket of Chanderpaul, the man who had frustrated England for hours when these sides met in the Caribbean earlier this year.
Swann, who unusually for a spinner had opened the bowling, came back on to bowl Devon Smith (46) and had Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught at slip by Paul Collingwood next ball as bad light ended the afternoon session with 10 minutes still remaining.
