Sri Lanka defeated defending champions Pakistan by 5 wickets to win their fifth Asia Cup title, in Mirpur (Dhaka).

Lasith Malinga's bowling spell early on was crucial after Pakistan won the toss and chose to bat.

The menacing pacer claimed two in his first two overs to leave the opposition reeling.

It was then that skipper Misbah-ul-Haq (left) and Fawad Alam took control and repaired the initial damage.

Once Misbah was dismissed, Fawad took over and switched gears well. He hit a ton off 126 balls.

Pakistan had no answers to Malinga's might though as the bowler returned to claim three more wickets. In fact every single Pakistan batsmen fell to his pace as the team eventually posted 260/5.

It was a respectable total after the initial setbacks. The innings was powered also by Umar Akmal (extreme left) who hit 59 off 42 and gave good support to Fawad.

In reply, Lahiru Thirimanne (in pic) and Kusal Perera gave a solid start to the Lankans.

The two put on 56 before Perera and Kumar Sangakkara (0) fell to Saeed Ajmal's spin.

Mahela Jayawardene walked in and change the course of the game. He ensured that Thirimanne received the support he deserved and anchored himself at one end.

Jaywardene scored 75 off 93 balls to make Pak bowlers toil.

Thirimanne at the other end, eventually scored his 3rd ton - second of the tournament - to put Lankans on the verge of a win. Although he fell on 101, it was too late in the day for a comeback.

Sri Lanka now have won Asia Cup the most number of times, with India - five.
