ENG vs AUS, 5th Ashes Test, Day 1 Highlights: England's Harry Brook fell short of a maiden Test century against Australia as the tourists had the better of the opening day of the fifth and final Ashes clash at The Oval on Thursday. Brook's 85 was the centrepiece of England's 283 all out, although he should have been dismissed for five on a day where Australia, unusually, dropped five catches. But Australia, after captain Pat Cummins won his first toss of the series and sent England into bat in overcast, bowler-friendly, conditions, then lost just one wicket under the floodlights to be 61-1 at the close -- a deficit of 222. Usman Khawaja was 26 not out and Marnus Labuschagne, fresh from his hundred in last week's rain-marred drawn third Test at Old Trafford, unbeaten on two.

Australia will be really disappointed mostly with their catching because their bowlers created a lot of chances for them. They took time to get suited to the conditions but didn't let the hosts get away with it. They could have restricted England to a lower total than this if they took their five dropped catches which could make a difference. Mitchell Starc was the pick of the bowler again with four wickets while Josh Hazlewood and Todd Murphy got a couple each. Pat Cummins who bowled really well chipped in with the one. Join us in a bit for Australia's reply.

England have been finally bowled out for 283! It was a solid batting performance from them considering the conditions out there. The two openers got them to a very good start adding 62 together. However, Ben Duckett was dismissed for 41 and they suffered a mini collapse as they went from 62-0 to 73-3. However, Harry Brook was brilliant and took his chance well after getting dropped on 5 by Alex Carey. He was the top scorer for them with an excellent 85 while Moeen Ali supported him well before he suffered a groin injury and had to go all-out attack which resulted in his downfall. Even though they lost a couple of wickets in quick succession, crucial contributions from Chris Woakes and Mark Wood took them to a good total.

54.4WMitchell Starc to Chris Woakes
OUT! CAUGHT! Mitchell Starc ends up with a four-wicket haul and Chris Woakes' useful inning has come to an end! England have been bowled out for what they will feel is an under-par first-inning total but on the other end, the Aussies will be walking back to the dressing room with their tails up. This is bowled short and outside the off stump. Chris Woakes throws the kitchen sink at this as he attempts to pull the ball over deep square leg for a maximum. He does not time this well and the ball goes towards the fielder who is placed there. Travis Head is well ahead of the ropes and has to back paddle a bit but grabs hold of another comfortable catch. Australia will hope that their batters are able to play England out of this game with their batting effort.

52.5WMitchell Starc to Stuart Broad
OUT! CAUGHT! Stuart Broad perishes as he looks to throw his bat at everything! Mitchell Starc gets his third wicket of the inning and Australia need just one more wicket to bowl their opponents out on Day 1 after winning the toss. This is delivered short and outside the off pole. Stuart Broad backs away once again and looks to slap this towards the off side. He does not get his timing right and the ball goes off the top-edge towards the cover-point fielder. Travis Head settles under this one and despite the crowd trying to put him off, he holds onto this one safely. Australia's opening batters will already be thinking about their job in hand.
