Could Alex Ovechkin’s Capitals Role Change In His 22nd NHL Season? 

Alex Ovechkin is back in Washington and getting ready for his 22nd NHL season, with the Capitals entering training camp after making several major additions to their roster. The 41-year-old captain returned to MedStar Capitals Iceplex on Friday and greeted teammates and staff ahead of camp. While Ovechkin remains focused on scoring goals and chasing more NHL history, Washington's improved depth could lead to some changes in his role and ice time this season.

Longtime teammate Tom Wilson believes Ovechkin's priorities have evolved as he enters another season, with winning now carrying even more weight alongside his personal goals.

“At this point, he wants to win; he wants to be part of a good team,” Wilson said, per Mark Lazerus. “If our team's winning and playing well and he has 30 goals instead of 40, I don't see him getting upset about that.”

That does not mean Ovechkin's competitive edge has changed. Wilson added that the Capitals captain still wants to be the best version of himself and continues to hold himself to an extremely high standard.

Ovechkin showed that energy when he returned to the Capitals' practice facility Friday, greeting players and staff with hugs and handshakes. He also met new teammate Jordan Kyrou for the first time, welcoming the forward to Washington.

Ovechkin signed a one-year, $4.25 million contract this summer after leading the Capitals with 32 goals and 64 points last season. He enters the new campaign with 929 regular-season goals and 1,006 combined goals, leaving him 10 short of Wayne Gretzky's NHL record of 1,016 combined goals.

Washington added significant depth this offseason, bringing in Alex Tuch, Jordan Kyrou, Boone Jenner and Vincent Desharnais. That could give coach Spencer Carbery more freedom to spread ice time across the lineup, potentially reducing Ovechkin's minutes from the career-low 17:27 he averaged last season.

Carbery has not revealed exactly how Ovechkin will be used but made it clear that the captain will remain a major part of the team. Others around the Capitals and across the NHL have also spoken about what they expect from Ovechkin heading into his 22nd season.

• Spencer Carbery: The Capitals coach said Ovechkin remains “a huge part” of the team and is highly motivated heading into the season.
• Sidney Crosby: The Penguins captain said Ovechkin still knows how to score goals and that his shot is not going anywhere, even as he gets older.
• Chris Patrick: The Capitals GM expects Ovechkin to bring energy and excitement to a team that believes it can contend for the Stanley Cup.
• Tom Wilson: Wilson praised Ovechkin's passion, drive and resiliency, saying those qualities continue to make him a special leader for Washington.

Ovechkin has already said he wants to win another Stanley Cup, while his pursuit of more goals remains a major storyline. With training camp beginning September 17, Washington will soon get its first look at how its longtime captain fits into a deeper Capitals lineup.
