Shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor finished 13th in Group A of men's shot put Qualification Round and failed to qualify for the finals, at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. In his first attempt, he registered a throw of 19.99m but endured two foul throws in the second and third attempts. Meanwhile, the Indian men's hockey team crashed to a 5-2 defeat to Belgium in the men's hockey semi-final and will now play for the bronze medal. After conceding an early goal India roared back to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter but Belgium equalised in the second quarter. India conceded three goals in the final 15 minutes and lost the chance of going through to the final. Mandeep Singh and Harmanpreet Singh scored for India while Alexander Hendrickx scored a remarkable hat-trick for Belgium.
In wrestling, India's Sonam Malik lost to Mongolia's Bolortuya Khurelkhuu in the women's Freestyle 62kg 1/8 Final. Sonam's opponent lost her quarterfinal bout hence, ending her hopes of making it to the repechage round to fight for bronze.
Earlier, India's Annu Rani finished 14th in the women's javelin throw qualification Group A and failed to make it to the finals. She registered throws of 50.35m, 53.19m and 54.04m which wasn't enough to put her in the top 12.
Also, it is worth noting that Elaine Thompson-Herah won her second consecutive Olympic 200m gold medal, which she had already achieved in Rio 2016. The Jamaican sprinter had earlier also won the 100m gold medal, which she had also notched in 2016.
