Charles Conwell, all of 18 years of age, goes by the name 'Bad News'. Ahead of Rio 2016 he explained why, "It's 'because when you get in the ring with me, it's going to be bad news for you".
On Tuesday USA's number one amateur boxer met with some bad news. He was sent home packing by India's Vikas Krishan in the first round of the middleweight category. Krishan earned a unanimous decision from the judges winning all three rounds. Conwell regards Muhammad Ali as his boxing hero. He may have to do a bit more than trash talk to reach the dizzying heights his hero reached.
A veteran of two Olympics, Vikas came into a ring with a plan, "I knew I had to attack from the word go against a more younger and stronger opponent. Win the first two rounds and win the match was the plan, because the wait and watch policy sometimes doesn't allow you to make a comeback into a match"
It was poetic justice for what happened to Vikas in 2012 in London where Errol Spence- another boxer from America- was declared the winner on technical grounds post an appeal, after Vikas had been adjudged the winner at the end of the bout.
"I had trained with Conwell's coach in the USA for a few days and knew his style well, which is what helped me today", said Vikas just minutes after his win.
The 24 year old now faces Turkey's Onder Sipal who hasn't won a medal at any major international competition. Vikas on the other hand is a World Championship bronze medallist.
His real test though will come in the quarters where he's likely to face world no.3 Bektemir Melikuziev from Uzbekistan, the current silver medallist at the World Championships. Melikuziev in fact beat Vikas at the Asian Championship last year in the finals of the 75kg category.
