The hosts won the toss, opted to field and struck early on with RP Singh sending Michael Hussey back to the dug-out in the third over of the day.

Murali Vijay too didn't quite seem to be his usual self and was dismissed by Thisara Perera for 28.

Suresh Raina however, came to the middle and began playing the ball around to deny Kochi any further success in the initial spell.

Raina's knock was cut short when rain began pouring down and the match had to be halted for a considerable period of time.

Once the match began again though, with 17-overs a side, Raina shifted gears and slammed a commendable 50. He however was run out soon after.

The Chennai fans could perhaps sense that the rains and the eventual reduction in overs had left their team at a slight disadvantage as S Badrinath followed Raina back.

Skipper MS Dhoni though came to the middle and made full use of the remaining overs to take his team to a total of 131 in the re-alloted overs.

Once Brendon McCullum gets going, no total can seem to be enough. It was true against the Chennai side as well, as the Kiwi struck a thunderous 47 with three massive sixes.
Zoom
McCullum was partnered well by his skipper Mahela Jayawardena who hit 16 but could not carry on his innings to take his team home himself.

The damage though had already been done as even though McCullum fell soon after, the Chennai Super Kings were unable to salvage the match as Kochi won with 2 overs to spare.
