A broken thumb downs Dilshan

Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan has broken his right thumb and will bat against England on day five of the second test only if absolutely necessary.

England will resume the final day on 149-2, 156 ahead and hoping to build a big enough lead to ask the tourists to bat again.

Dilshan was struck twice on the thumb while anchoring Sri Lanka's first-innings 479 all out.

The thumb on his bottom hand needed taping on Saturday after he was struck by a rising ball from Chris Tremlett while on 55. He went past his previous test best the next day before Tremlett hit him again, bending his injured thumb back toward the wrist.

Dilshan batted on but added only one more run before falling for 193.
