The biggest match of the day was five-time world champion Rafael Nadal versus American John Isner.

A grueling 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-7 (2), 6-2, 6-4 match eventually went in favour of the Spaniard but the resilience of Isner was well appreciated.

Maria Sharapova though had no such problems as she cruised into the second round courtesy a 6-3, 6-0 win against Croatia's Mirjana Lucic.

The real winner of the day was Virginie Razzano of France who won hearts despite her 3-6,1-6 loss. She dedicated her match to her fiance who had died just eight days ago.

Australian Jarmila Gajdosova who defeated Razzano also showed a brave face on the court after a recent separation from her husband of 10 years.

In other matches from the men's draw, Robin Soderling raced past Ryan Harrison of the US after a brief resistance in the second set.

Joy evaded the Indians on Tuesday as Somdev Devvarman failed to mount any strong resilience and bowed down to Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia 3-6,4-6,3-6.

There were a few upsets however as former French Open winner Ana Ivanovic crashed out versus Johanna Larsson of Sweden 7-6 (3), 0-6, 6-2.

Victoria Azarenka though had no trouble in her 6-3, 6-3 victory against Andrea Hlavackova.

Victoria Azarenka of Belarus though had no problems in her 6-3, 6-3 win against Andrea Hlavackova.

China's Na Li kept Asian hopes flying as she defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
