With Euro 2004 just a month away, last night's football friendlies took on a special significance. It was a particularly unhappy outing for Germany who were drubbed 5-1 by Romania. Meanwhile, Euro 2004 hosts Portugal struggled once again to prove that they should be considered the favourites. Portugal had failed in six attempts to beat sides who will feature in the Euro 2004 competition and it looked like it would be no different against Sweden. The visitors took the lead in the 17th minute after a dreadful mistake from the Portuguese keeper. But when Luis Figo was fouled in the area nine minutes later by Andreas Johansson, it looked like Portugal had found the equaliser. However, the Real Madrid star's penalty failed to find the target.Chances though continued to come thick and fast for Portugal who eventually scored in the 33rd minute. Portugal continued to dominate proceedings but sheer bad luck found themselves 2-1 down. But deep into injury time Portugal managed to salvage some pride by drawing the match at 2-2. Argentina winMeanwhile, in another match Argentina defeated Morocco by a solitary goal. The victory was a good preparation for Argentina's 2006 World Cup qualifier away to Brazil in June. There was also a confidence boosting win for the United States as they defeated Mexico with an injury time goal through Eddie Pope in Dallas.
