Greece's footballers brought some much-needed and unexpected joy to their hard-pressed compatriots back home on Saturday as they reached the Euro 2012 quarter-finals with a stunning 1-0 win over Russia.

Poland coach Franciszek Smuda resigned after the Euro 2012 co-host was eliminated from the championship on Saturday in a 1-0 defeat by the Czech Republic.

The Czech Republic won Group A and reached the Euro 2012 quarter-finals because they learnt from their mistakes, their coach Michal Bilek said.

Co-hosts Poland crashed out of the European Championship as they lost 1-0 to the Czech Republic at the Municipal Stadium here on Saturday with their opponents winning Group A.

With violence flaring up in Warsaw and injuries reported, the football at the European Championship went ahead Tuesday with the Czech Republic beating Greece 2-1.

Petr Jiracek scored two goals as Wolfsburg edged out bottom-place Freiburg 3-2 in the Bundesliga on Friday.
