Glenn Hoddle was sacked as manager of English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. The move came a day after Spurs were beaten 3-1 at White Hart Lane by Southampton - their second straight loss at home. David Pleat was named caretaker manager. Glenn Hoddle will be remembered as one of the most popular players in Tottenham history. But his record as manager of the north London club does not compare well with his record on the pitch. Saturday's loss to Southampton proved to be one too many for the former England manager. Hoddle joined Spurs from Southampton in April 2001, replacing George Graham. It marked the return of a White Hart Lane hero and sparked optimism of a Tottenham revival. But, after coming ninth in 2001/02, Spurs faded at the end of last season, finishing 10th. This season, the club has collected just one win and four points from the first six games and lies third from bottom in the 20-team standings. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy released this statement on Sunday. (AP)
