India have two massive games coming up in Pool D, and they'll need to put on a good performance to seal their place in the knockout stage. First up is England, who are ranked five places above India in the FIH rankings. Then follows the high-octane match against arch-rivals Pakistan!

Five penalty corners for India today, and three of them were converted into goals. Sanjay broke the deadlock, and then captain Harmanpreet Singh showed his class by converting two PCs. 

FULL TIME! INDIA WIN! Victory for India in their opening match of the Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 Pool D game. Despite not being able to hold on to a clean sheet, India dominated almost the entire match and earn a well-deserved win.

Lovely move by India with Mandeep Singh at the heart of it, but the shot is saved by Wales. A powerful shot on the rebound from India, but it's wide of the goal. Just over a minute now left on the clock.

GOOOAAALLL! Wales manage to score one! A massive goalmouth scramble, India's goalkeeper appeared to have prevented it, but Wales manage to somehow retrieve the ball and put it in. The umpire has to go for a video check to confirm whether the ball went over the line, and it's confirmed that it did go in before the whistle was blown.

Excellent goalkeeping from India, denying Wales star Gareth Furlong from a penalty corner. Powerful drag-flick by Furlong, but goalkeeper Mohith HS makes a superb save. Clean sheet still intact for India.

The final quarter is underway! Will Wales be able to bag an early goal in this quarter and threaten a comeback?

India end the third quarter on a dominant note. They're on the verge of sealing an emphatic victory to begin their Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign. Will captain Harmanpreet Singh manage to score a hattrick? He has one quarter left to do so.

GOOOOAAALLLL! Third goal for India, second for Harmanpreet Singh! Penalty corner from the left, and a smashing drag-flick from the Indian captain. Inch-perfect placement, as we've gotten used to from him.

The third quarter hasn't been a particularly eventful one so far. Wales have tried to enter the Indian territory a few times, but the Indian defence has been sharp and alert on each occasion. No clear-cut chances for India either.

Q3 10' IND 2-0 WAL

We are back! The third quarter begins in Amstelveen. India dominated the first two quarters, but they'd like to add a couple of goals more to stamp their authority and confirm the win.

Q3 1' IND 2-0 WAL

HALF TIME! The second quarter comes to an end in Amstelveen, with more India dominance on show. After two goals in the first quarter, no goals came in the second. India survived a scare when Wales forward Pritchard missed a big chance.

India come on a brilliant counter-attack, switching play from the left wing to the right. Rajinder, in space, slams a shot from the edge of the D, but it goes wide of the goal. And that will be the final attack of the second quarter.

A massive chance for Wales as their striker Pritchard receives a brilliant pass and goes 1v1 against the goalkeeper. However, despite managing to go around the keeper, he ends up wasting the chance by hitting the near post. India survive a big scare.

The second quarter is underway in Amstelveen. India on the front foot straight away, winning a penalty corner. They come close to scoring from it, but a deflection prevents them.

End of the first quarter! Wales started off well, but India have taken over completely and are now two goals up. Sanjay opened the scoring and captain Harmanpreet Singh doubled it. Both goals came from penalty corners.

GOOOOAAAALLLL! 2-0 India! This time it's the captain, the 'Sarpanch Sahab', Harmanpreet Singh! Another penalty corner, the signature drag-flick and goal No. 2 for India!

GOOOOAAALLLL! Sanjay opens the scoring for India in the first quarter! A couple of penalty corners in succession for India, and Sanjay converts the second one. India take the lead, despite captain Harmanpreet Singh not being on the field.

It has been a positive start from Wales in the opening minutes of the first quarter. A couple of attacking moves already from Wales, who are taking the game to the much higher-ranked Indian team. India goalkeeper Suraj Karkera has been sharp, denying the Welsh players.

WE ARE LIVE! The Men's Hockey World Cup 2026 begins as India take on Wales. India are attacking from right to left in the first two quarters. India in all saffron, Wales in all black.

India enjoy a massive head-to-head advantage over Wales in international hockey, having never lost to them in five outings in the past. In the five meetings, India won four, while one ended in a draw. Harmanpreet Singh and co. are certainly the favourites heading into the match.

We are around five minutes away from the scheduled start time of the Pool D game between India and Wales. It's the first match of the Men's Hockey World Cup 2026!

India's current hockey vice-captain Hardik Singh defended the decision to switch to saffron jerseys, calling it a "team decision":

"Our previous jerseys matched with the AstroTurf. And we were facing some issues. And I think if orange jerseys are beneficial for us, then why not try that? This is the team's strategy. It is a tactic," he said.

Here's what former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha had said, after Hockey India announced the jersey colour switch from blue to orange:

"This is embarrassing. The legacy & identity of the Indian team has always been BLUE. I wore the Blue jersey with pride for many years. Fans want to see our Indian team in blue. What is the logic of orange?"

The Indian hockey team will play in their brand new saffron jerseys for the first time today. The jerseys stirred massive debate and controversy when unveiled, with former captain Viren Rasquinha questioning the change in colour from blue to saffron. However, it was later clarified that the jersey colour was switched because the blue jerseys clashed with the blue turf.
