A LinkedIn message that Roberto “Pico” Lopes first mistook for spam has ultimately taken him to football’s biggest stage.Born in Ireland and currently playing as a centre-back for Shamrock Rovers, Lopes qualifies to represent Cape Verde through his father.As part of a nationwide effort to identify players of Cape Verdean heritage abroad, the Cape Verde Football Federation reached out to him via LinkedIn.The first message, written in Portuguese, went unanswered after Lopes assumed it was spam.
