India vs England, 5th Test, Day 1 Highlights: Rishabh Pant hit a counter-attacking 146 off 111 balls as India made a strong fightback against England to post 338 for seven on Day 1 of the ongoing fifth Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. India were reeling at 98 for five when Pant and Jadeja came to the rescue act and stitched 222 runs for the sixth wicket. While Pant eventually lost his wicket to Joe Root, Jadeja remained unbeaten on 83 before stumps were called on Day 1. Earlier, James Anderson and Matthew Potts had kept India under the pump by taking three and two wickets, respectively, after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to bowl in the match. Jadeja got the nod ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin for the game. On the other hand, Cheteshwar Pujara opened the batting for India in the absence of Rohit Sharma but scored just 13 runs before becoming the victim of James Anderson. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli's poor form continued as he scored 11 runs before losing his wicket to Matty Potts. Notably, Jasprit Bumrah leads the Indian side after Rohit Sharma tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday once again. England are in red-hot form as they defeated New Zealand 3-0 recently by playing an attacking brand of cricket under Ben Stokes.

IND vs ENG, 5th Test: Stumps!
That's stumps on the first day of the India vs England fifth Test. Ravindra Jadeda remains unbeaten on 83 not out off 163 balls while Mohammed Shami walks back on zero not out off 11.
A boundary comes after a long time. Matty Potts bowled it full on the pads of Ravindra Jadeja and the latter perfectly found the gap between short mid-on and mid-wicket for a four.
One brings two! India are seventh down, courtesy a terrific bouncer from Ben Stokes to Shardul Thakur. The Indian all-rounder departs on 1 off 12 balls and England are back in the game with full energy.
Rishabh Pant is out! Joe Root's golden arm comes to the rescue act for England once again. It was an off spin bowled outside off stump to Pant. The latter tried to hit it for a boundary but got a thick outside edge and the first slip put his case to rest with a clean catch. Pant departs on 146 off 111 balls.
Another Indian batter gets to a milestone and this time it is Ravindra Jadeja. He gets to his fifty in 109 balls. The southpaw has provided great support to Pant from the other end.
Outside off stump from Matty Potts and Jadeja throws his bat to it. The southpaw was lucky as the ball took a thick outside edge of his bat and ran to the boundary for a four towards third man.
This is superb batting from Pant. He danced down the track to Anderson on the very first ball of the over and smashed him for a four down the ground. This man is so unpredictable!
Matty Potts continues to err in line and pays the price again. This time Jadeja gets the offering on the pads and gets a four off it. Though it didn't come off the bat, India get the crucial four runs.
Easy pickings for Pant. He got full on the pads from Matty Potts and comfortably flicked it for a four down the leg side. With it, Pant completes his 2000 Test runs.
Rishabh Pant played a reverse-scoop on the ball of James Anderson. The ball didn't go for a boundary but Pant managed to sneak a couple. More than the runs, it is about the audacity of Pant that impresses one and all.
Superb shot! It's a stand-and-deliver stuff front Pant. Matty Potts overpitched it around off and Pant drove it for a sweet-looking four in the cover region.
