Never Imagined IPL Media Rights Would Command Top Dollar: Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar on Monday said he had never imagined that the Indian Premier League's media rights would one day be sold for over Rs 16,000 crore. Speaking to NDTV, Gavaskar, who has been associated with the cash-rich league since the very beginning, added he knew the BCCI had a winner after witnessing the first few games of the opening edition in 2008. Gavaskar's comments came after Star India edged out Sony Pictures to secure the league's media rights with a bid of Rs 16,347.50 crore. The bidding for various media rights of the cash-rich league was held in Mumbai for a five-year period from 2018-2022.
