... THE RUN CHASE ...

!
Right then, West Indies batters have failed to bat the full quota of 50 overs but they have given their bowlers something to bowl at. On the other hand, South Africa will be pleased with their bowling effort and the onus is now on their batters to take them past the finishing line. Will Aiden Markram and co. succeed in doing so? We shall find out shortly. Back in a bit for the chase...

After West Indies were put into bat, Kyle Mayers and Brandon King got the visitors off to a swift start. They did lose Mayers in the 7th over but Shamarh Brooks joined hands with Brandon King and kept the scoreboard ticking. The duo stitched a 71-run stand and by doing so, set a solid foundation. However, they were pegged back losing both set batters in quick succession. Moreover, the early departure of Shai Hope made matters worse for them. Nicholas Pooran got off to a start but could go on to get a big score. Jason Holder was holding his end but he too perished in his quest up to the ante. With 9 wickets down, Odean Smith struck a few meaty blows but his departure brought an end to the innings.

This has been a stunning bowling display by South Africa, bowling West Indies out inside the 50 overs. Considering the overhead conditions at the start of the game, the stand-in skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram needed his new ball bowlers to get some early inroads. Marco Jansen did manage to take an early scalp but the rest of the bowlers were unable to compliment him. Once the first Powerplay was over, the hosts pulled things back with some quiet overs. They kept the pressure on the opposition batters and were rewarded with wickets at regular intervals. By doing so, they never allowed West Indies to gain any momentum in their innings. The lower-order batters did trouble them but it was a good cleanup job by the pacers. Marco Jansen, Bjorn Fortuin and Gerald Coetzee broke the back of the West Indies batting unit by accounting for two wickets each.
