Mohammad Irfan picked up the wicket of Kane Williamson as Pakistan aimed to fight back.
Shahid Afridi picked up two wickets but conceded some runs as New Zealand continued to make good progress.
Guptill looked good for a hundred but he was dismissed by Mohammad Sami for 80 off 48 balls.
Pakistan kept chipping away at the death overs and it looked like they would restrict the Kiwis.
However, an attacking 23-ball 36 from Ross Taylor gave New Zealand a good score of 180/5.
Chasing 181, Sharjeel Khan gave Pakistan a blazing start as he blasted 47 off 25 balls to help Pakistan reach 65 in five overs.
However, with his dismissal, Pakistan stuttered and they fell behind in the asking rate thanks to some wonderful bowling from Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner.
Shahid Afridi struck some lusty blows but could not help Pakistan as they plodded along towards the end.
New Zealand won the match by 22 runs to secure their spot in the semi-finals of the ICC World Twenty20.
