India skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and chose to bat on a dry Kanpur wicket. KL Rahul and Murali Vijay gave India a solid start as the hosts dominated first hour's play.
Mitchell Santner gave New Zealand their first breakthrough of the match as he got rid of Rahul, who scored 32 off 39 balls.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Vijay then steadied the ship and added 112 runs for the second wicket. Both also got to their fifties.
Santner, who kept on attacking the stumps, removed Pujara, who looked well set to get to a hundred.
With Virat Kohli falling to Neil Wagner, Vijay also lost his wicket soon as India went in to tea with four wickets down.
Rohit Sharma and R Ashwin revived India's innings with their 52-run partnership but Trent Boult struck thrice in a span of five overs to leave the hosts in all sorts of trouble.
Santner, who removed Rohit Sharma for 35, finished with the figures of 3/77.
Boult, who found some sharp inswing with the second new ball, ended with impressive figures of 3/57.
India seemed to have made the ideal start to their 500th Test but New Zealand showed what they are capable of.
