This was Virat Kohli's first T20I match in charge as India captain since he was made skipper in all formats of the game following MS Dhoni's resignation.
Put into bat first, Kohli opened the innings for India along with KL Rahul.
England showed great discipline in their bowling, dismissing India batsmen in quick succession. The in-form Kohli fell for 29 as India struggled.
Suresh Raina started well, but failed to convert his knock to a half-century, falling for 34.
MS Dhoni's unbeaten 36 eventually helped India end their innings at a total of 147/7.
England started the chase well, with openers Jason Roy and Sam Billings going all guns blazing at the Indian bowlers.
Yuzvendra Chahal brought India back into the game after dimissing both Roy and Billings in the first over of his spell.
Skipper Eoin Morgan then combined with Joe Root to steady the England innings. Morgan scored 51 as the visitors inched closer to a victory.
Joe Root remained unbeaten of 46 as England sealed a comfortable seven-wicket win.
England now have a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The 2nd T20I will be held in Nagpur on Sunday.
