That is all from us then! 3 weeks of pulse-racing cricket has finally ended. Sri Lanka are the Champions, a fifth different winner from five different editions. Some memorable moments to cherish from this tournament, India did well to get this far undefeated but were undone by a resurgent Sri Lankan team. The next round of cricketing action starts from the 16th of April in the UAE where the Indian T20 League kicks off for its seventh edition. Until that time, it's goodbye and cheers.
Lasith Malinga, the winning captain comes in for a chat. Thinks that he was really lucky to captain the last 3 games. Today was a lucky day for us. This was Sanga's and Mahela's last match and they wanted to do something very special for this game. We bowled well in the last overs with Nuwan, Senanayake and himself. All the youngsters will definitely benefit from their massive experience. Hopes that they play Test cricket for many years to come.
MS Dhoni picks the runners up prize. Say that in the middle overs, the batsmen tried their best, one of those days that did not go their way. Sri Lankans executed their plans very well especially with the yorkers. With Malinga, the sling action takes the ball from a low height and that makes it difficult to get under the ball. Virat Kohli has been brilliantly in the last one and a half years, he has made the most of his opportunities and he is someone who can bat well in any format. It;s hard to win the tournament twice as it's hard to deal with the conditions. Cricketing-wise, it was fantastic and the crowd was brilliant with their support.
Virat Kohli is named the Man of the Tournament for being the leading run scorer by miles. Congratulates the Lanka and especially Mahela and Sanga. Disappointed that they lost but personally, it has been very satisfying for him. Even in the last World Cup, he tried to contribute but unfortunately things did not go their way. Was a bit frustrating not to get strike in the end but the other batsmen were also trying to hit the ball. One of those off days when they couldn't do much about the situation, credits Sri Lanka for their brilliant comeback, very proud to be a part of this team and a lot of positive things from this tournament.
Kumar Sangakkara has been named the Man of the Match. Says it's been a long time coming, 6 years and 5 finals so it means a lot to all of them, they are very happy, proud and humbled by this. Their comeback was amazing as Virat Kohli was taking the game away from us. Playing for Sri Lanka means everything, his family and Sri Lanka are the two best things that have happened to him. Everyone has to go, his time is now.
India did well to put up a fight with such a low score but in the end, it was never going to be enough. Sri Lanka finally getting what they deserved, they played like champions and nobody can argue that fact.
India were put into bat on a flat wicket. Kohli once again turned out to be the the star for India as he single-handedly battled on. Sri Lanka were brilliant in the death to keep India to 130. In response, Sri Lanka stuttered at the start but as they say cometh the hour, cometh the man. Kumar Sangakkara combined with the powerhouse Thisara Perera to take Sri Lanka through by 6 wickets.
The victory lap begins! They carry their heroes on their shoulders. A fitting farewell to the two legends of Sri Lankan cricket, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene who both finish on a high. What players they have been for Sri Lanka! Take a bow you two!
Memorable scenes here at Mirpur! Sri Lanka have stopped the Indian juggernaut and in doing so, have won the ICC WORLD T20 for the first time. This is also their first outright ICC title after the 1996 World Cup triumph.
