Right then, that is it from the 1st ODI at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch but there's plenty of action still left in this series. The all-important 2nd ODI will be played on Wednesday, 19 November in Napier and it will begin at 1 am GMT. However, you can tune-in a lot sooner to catch our build-up to the game. Until then, take care and goodbye!
Mitchell Santner, skipper of New Zealand, says that the bowlers have done a great job. Continues to praise the masterclass innings of Daryl Mitchell and also says that he is an important asset to the team. Adds that his batters were smart to play according to the wind. Ends up saying that the dimension of the ground really matters, in short boundary venues, the short ball tactic wouldn't have worked, but it worked well in this and ends up saying that was there main plan to stop the Windies chasing the target.
West Indies skipper Shai Hope says that they must take the positives from this game but they also must be critical and the batters up top need to take more responsibility. Adds that Roston Chase was very good today and he played his part, especially in the backend of the innings and overall, the bowlers did well. Mentions that they need to find more ways to score and also negate those short balls better.
Daryl Mitchell is the Player of the Match. He says that it's always nice to provide a big score on the board to help the team win. Continues that it's a special venue for him and he has done a lot of hard work to get better. He says that the pitch provided some extra bounce, but they aimed to rotate the strike as much as they could, to keep the scoreboard ticking. Ends up saying that they will walk up tomorrow and plan accordingly to prepare for the next match.
The Presentation ceremony...
Earlier in the game, Shai Hope won the toss and put the Kiwis into bat. There was plenty of grass on the deck and there was a steady breeze throughout the day that also helped the pacers and Matthew Forde did take advantage of the conditions, picking up two wickets in two deliveries. However, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell counter-attacked well and put on a 67-run stand to get the game back in the balance. It was a tussle right throughout but Mitchell made the difference with a fine hundred and got his side to a solid total. For West Indies, Jayden Seales picked up three wickets but it was Roston Chase with his economical spell that ket the Kiwis from getting close to the 300-run mark.
West Indies took the game deep but they will feel that they should have taken on the bowlers a bit more in the first 20-odd overs. After the early dismissal of John Campbell, Alick Athanaze and Keacy Carty stitched together a steady stand but were a bit too pragmatic in their approach and once set, both of them got out. The middle order came good with the likes of Shai Hope and Roston Chase scoring valuable runs but it was Sherfane Rutherford with a half-century, who really got them back in the contest. Justin Greaves and Romario Shepherd did their best and rode their luck but it was just a bridge too far for them.
New Zealand will thank their lucky stars as they let the Windies off the hook and it was a torrid outing in terms of catching under the Christchurch night sky tonight. However, the pacers did a good job early in the innings and Kyle Jamieson was the pick of the bowlers as he used that extra lift off the deck really well and picked up 3 wickets as well. Mitchell Santner did a great holding job as he usually does and the likes of Matt Henry and Zakary Foulkes too bowled economical spells, picking up a wicket each. Jacob Duffy was a bit off color and bowled plenty of wides but did manage to hold his nerve right at the death to see his side over the line.
Wow, now that was a tight contest, probably not the best in terms of quality but sometimes when things get close, we get to see a lot of action. West Indies gave it everything towards the end but it was the foundation laid down earlier in the chase by the Kiwi bowlers and wickets at crucial stages that got them the win and they take a 1-0 lead in this three-match ODI series.
