So, that wraps up our formalities of this game. Hope you enjoyed our coverage and we look forward to your company in 5 days time for the second and final Test between these two sides in Christchurch. Until then, it's good bye from us.
MAN OF THE MATCH - ADAM VOGES for his marathon knock of 239. His calm and composed knock spread over 8 hours helped Australia take a gigantic first innings lead after Smith and Khawaja had laid the foundation.
While compiling his third ton in a row that included 2 double tons, Voges created several records on the way. He got good support from Nevill and Siddle as the tourists racked up a huge lead of 379. Faced with a big deficit, New Zealand's batsmen just couldn't come to the party with their ace batsman Williamson suffering a rare twin failure in the game. Skipper McCullum too had a poor game in his 100th Test as the hosts were totally outplayed.
Australia's batsmen then rammed home the advantage with skipper Smith's fifty leading the charge on day 1. He put on 128 for the 3rd wicket with Khawaja to weather the difficult surface. Smith failed to get to his ton but Khawaja didn't as the southpaw continued his purple patch with a terrific knock. If New Zealand thought this was it, they were horribly wrong as Voges joined the party with a mammoth double ton.
New Zealand will look back at the first morning where they virtually lost the game after being put into bat on a green surface. The hosts lost half their side inside the first hour and from then on, it was always an uphill task although their tail pushed the total to 183, a figure that looked distant at one stage when they were 97-7. Hazlewood's 4-fer was the standout performance for Australia with Siddle and Lyon providing able support.
Starting the day at 178-4, New Zealand lost Anderson very early. Debutant Nicholls got fifty but couldn't carry on and by lunch, Australia had more or less sealed the fate of this game. Marsh was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets while Lyon was brilliant with a 4-fer. Hazlewood was tidy as the tourists bowlers put on a disciplined effort on a track that had flattened out.
New Zealand have been bowled out for 327. An emphatic victory for Australia as they win by an innings and 52 runs to go 1-0 up in the 2-Test series. This victory also means that the visitors have retained the Trans-Tasman trophy. Starting the post-lunch session with just 3 wickets to win, Australia took less than an hour to complete proceedings. Southee's blitzkrieg provided some brief entertainment before the tourists duly finished off the innings.
